Last I heard, Microsoft was reneging on HD-DVD support. Has this changed again? If it has, then I'm in!! If it hasn't, it's a PS3 for me.

cause sony had a heat start and better games. microsoft has about $40 billion in the bank right now. they wont be giving up that easily.

Sony in debt? When did this happen? Any links for proof of this, last I read they made a profit in their last financial year? You do realise that Microsoft is still losing money on every xBox they sell...and they will continue to do so with the 360.

I remember that. HE actually purchased a bunch of Ps2s because that was something that was electronic that could be purchased. But then that is where FUD started to fly and people made up notions they were used to run crude missile systems.

either way I beleive we WILL see the whole online distrobution system begin to unfold this generation...maybe not full games, but definitely other content because...microsoft is doing so

Microsoft can afford to take the long view on this. They want to push PCs out of the home and replace them with the XBox Whatever. Particularly HTPCs.

With high resolution TVs that are more like computer monitors now available, they and Sony are battling for space in your entertainment center.

Both companies have resources to apply. The difference is MS's other products are at monopoly saturation, while Sony has to compete with every other electronics manufacturer out there.

My money's on MS winning this war, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony's product being superior.

Oh yes, expect a lot of BS from these companies, whether it's MS or Sony. People have always fall for the best promises. The PR bots will be spreading more manure than all the steers in Texas, expect a lots of ads on MTV or other so-called "hip-hop" channels. Of course, all the kids of all ages will be all too happy to put down $400-500 for the hardware and $60 for the games, not to mention the monthly bills for high speed internet and on-line games. For familes with a lesser income, when it's time for college, your money was already spent for your youthful amusements.

Don't bring HD-DVD / Blu-Ray into this... I hate Sony too but I'll be damned if I see crap like HD-DVD win over the superior Blu-Ray, only because of its one advantage in extreme short term costs...

actually, Valve themselves didnt hype HL2 all that much, what you got is what they told you you was going to get......magazines and websites hyped it up more than Valve did, and even then it delivered a lot of what they gave, certainly so if you like that kind of game...if you dont like that kind of game then of course you will think the hype was too much.....

Doom 3 however was overhyped, it only looked good, the game itself was fairly mundane, shoot zombie, turn around and shoot zombie thats appeared from cupboard behind you due to the the trigger from shooting first zombie....yawn...

Oh man. I really don't care either way because I can afford to buy both, but I have the distinct impression that Microsoft is going to bury Sony this round. At least a year's advantage, fewer PS-only titles, far more experience and reputation with online service, and probably a significantly lower cost?

The specs won't change much, that's right. After the recent adjustment of prices and features, it seems pretty much set now.

But about not buying consoles at launch, I'd have to agree on that. Personally, I wouldn't buy them until at least a couple of good games came out, I'm not much of a console gamer, that's why. The quality of consoles at launch is usually lower (especially PS2s) but we can't really say about the upcoming consoles, it depends how good their QC is.

yeah but those launch prices usually hold for quite some time, so unless you are going to wait for 2 years-ish, there really isn't any economic advantage - unless you mean just to wait and see IF a console gets anything worth playing?

the thing about waiting to see if there are hardware bugs makes sense, but I bought a PS2 on launch day and used it with no problems at all until about a year and a half ago and there wasn't anything earth-shaking on the new units then either.

Thread starter should have listed the pre-launch Sony hype-specs vs. the actual hardware that went on sale, then listed the pre-launch Sony hype of the PS3 followed by a big question mark. The real question is, do I have the moxie to resist buying a 360 until the PS3 comes out to see how they actually compare in the real world?

The guy who said xboxlive is the best thing that happend to consoles is the guy i hope to disagree with. People keep talking about how xbox is gonna win becuase of xboxlive. I believe that sony isnt going to let their system release or go long without having their own online service. And i think it is VERY possible to make a better online system then xboxlive...its ok..but nothing great.

On the whole thing between microsoft and sony...i think sony is a little bit in trouble. I think that sony will be the better system...but it seems that mircrosoft has got the better end of the marketing in the US. While I am going to wait to see which is deff better and prob end up with the sony...most of the population will not. Many people saw the xbox360 stuff and are gonna demand that for xmas...thats gonna be a huge part of the market while sony is out of the game. Mean while sony hasnt really marketed much here...and they could release up to a year later..

this being said..they will still pwn in Japan

Yes, Sony is in it deep.

Their overall profits are slipping but they still made a profit - not quite in so deep as everyone seems to be making out. MS has a massive financial advantage over Sony, don't get me wrong, but that never means anything - people always love the underdog Microsoft may win the war but we need both companies to continue to make consoles/media PC's otherwise there is no competition and the winning company will get sloppy.
