I've never seen a company self-destruct so completely like Sony has in the past year.

Looks like a poor attempt at trying to generate an internet buzz to market it.

They want us to spend hours looking at it trying to decode it, but it probably just says something like "Be sure to drink your ovaltine".

They already look like abstract versions of letters. I still am put off by this ad because there's nothing to indicate that it's worth my time/effort to decipher it.

how is everyone criticizing this? it's their viral marketing website, and everyone has aparently done exactly what Sony wants, talk about it and how they don't understand it, thus making attempts to understand it, and in doing so create a buzz around it, however positive or negative it is.
microsoft's viral marketing websites for the x360 were equally pointless and did the same thing.

There are billboard ads in the LA area with a chess piece cut in half with blood and bone chips showing, and a PS3 in the corner. I actually like that ad. The ad the OP posted isn't as cool looking...

Because the point of viral marketting is to keep people totally in the dark about what is being advertised and make them work for answers for over a week by being overexposed to your advertisments In the end you've told half a dozen people about the ad in question trying to get help on figuring it out or whatever. In this situation, people just pointed and laughed about how obvious of an attempt it was to force people into spreading it... they made it blatently obvious who was doing it and what was being sold from the get-go, and the image of an overpriced console tells us immediately that we shouldn't give a rat's ass about what they are hocking.

I've said it half a dozen times in other threads, but Sony is trying to push advertising to the wrong people. The geek world has already made up their mind about buying the PS3 or not, so there's not a damn reason to waste an attempt at advertising to us in this manner.. . NOTHING about this ad can possibly convince a person that the PS3 is somehow superior and worth the price tag.

If they wanted to be effective, they'd push their ads towards people with money to blow. No joke. I don't care if the game of the century comes out for this console, it's still not going to sell as many units as the Xbox, Xbox360, Wii, Gamecube, or PS2 and POSSIBLY the Dreamcast.

If you haven't noticed, a majority of geeks (even if it's the slightest majority) think the PS3 is a laughing stock.
