lmao! That's exactly what I just realized in another thread...

Nigerian scammers are going to snipe every auction at the last second with 10k bids. You'll have to file a non-paying bidder thing with paypal and ebay, then relist the auction. After 4 or 5 cycles of this, Sony will have produced enough consoles to reduce or eliminate the shortage. Meanwhile, Sony benefits from

A) People believing they must be awesome if others are willing to pay 10k to buy one on ebay (newspapers won't pick up on the fact that the winning bidder was a scammer.)

B) More free advertising for Sony from newspapers covering the lines of people waiting for them

C) Sony ultimately sells thousands of consoles to people who really just wanted to resell them for a profit, but have now given up on ebay.

Not only Nigerian scammers; just frequenting video game forums, I've come across a lot of people who will waste a few minutes out of their day to create fake eBay accounts and snipe PS3 auctions for fun. There is a lot of animosity between people who actually want to buy one for personal use and eBayers.

That is why I will be selling mine on craigslist.

Meet in person at a bank in the middle of the day with a cash only transaction.

If you've actually sold something on ebay recently you would know that there are parameters you can set for bidders, such as minimum amount of feedback, or if the buyer has any bid retractions or failure to pay flags, they can't bid on your object. I lost time last year on a 360 that I was selling. This was prior to said parameters were set in place, the person set up a fake account and used my $2000 Buy It Now to get me off the list. Now, sellers can input a pay immediate feature upon using Buy It Now. With all said and done, it's pretty hard to scam on ebay if the seller knows what to look for.

You can't set the minimum feedback above 0.

You cannot block bidders with bid retractions.

If the bidder has 2 or more unpaid item strikes in the last 30 days, they can be blocked. That doesn't really help the first two unfortunate sellers, nor does it prevent the person from registering a new account.
