PS3 and sound...

My PS3 sound cuts out when I play dvds... If I unplug the HDMI and replug it, sound will come back, only to cut out again. Anyone seen this? Currently, my HDMI goes to the tv, and the tv is outputting sound to the receiver (this appears to work fine for games). My solution looks like it will be to buy an optical cable, connect the PS3 directly to the receiver, and set the appropriate preferences on the PS3 to output sound via optical.

I'm just wondering if anyone's seen this and if so, if my proposed solution looks good.

It just seems odd to do that extra step.

I have mine go directly to my receiver through optical cable.. I don't see why you would do it the other way if that option exists. Besides, the sound is better i'm sure

might want to check out the forums at us.playstation.com. Someone there should be able to help with this. Me, I have no clue. I currently have my audio going to my receiver through digital optical cable, but when I get a new receiver will be forced to use HDMI since it is the only cable that can handle DD-HD and DTS-MA (whenever PS3 starts handling the latter), and is also the only way to get 5.1 or 7.1 PCM to the receiver. Hopefully I don't encounter the problem, but I have yet to see something similar to this appear on the forums at the playstation website. Good luck to ya I guess.

I'm not sure what your implying here, but it sounds like you are saying why use anything other than digital optical? Because HDMI supports better sound. Sound won't sound better or worse between the two, they should sound exactly the same... pristine. only difference is HDMI can support much more bandwidth for audio.

I havent had this issue with HDMI but I did change to optical, and since launch, i have had no sound issues with the ps3 cutting out. I would check to see if your tv/receiver is having issues

Some TVs won't "forward" 5.1 sound to a receiver if I recall the AVSForum threads I read last year correctly.

I use optical to the receiver so I haven't had to deal with this myself.

Thanks troll.

To actually answer the OP's question, I've never had problems like this with HDMI. Have you tried even using the AV cables? If those work fine, you know the problem is likely with the HDMI.

Is it possible for you to take the HDMI to your receiver (then to the TV)? If not, try an optical cable, and that will likely solve your problem (and still sound great).

www.boardsus.playstation.com (forums) could help more.
