PS3: are they making new hardware outside of just increasing HDD space

I am considering a PS3 but not sure whether to look for a MGS4 Bundle now or wait a bit

I heard rumors of die shrink on the processor but no other info has been out since E3

I am disappointed to see they only announced an increased HDD size on their core system to 80GB with no dual shock controller

any thoughts guys..info is hard to come by, IMHO

TIA

The new 80GB PS3 is just the 40GB PS3 with a HDD swap. The 40GB PS3 has a 65nm chipset while the current 80GB MGS4 Bundle has a 90nm chipset.

The new 80GB PS3 will come with the DualShock 3.

No backward compatibility at all.

I obviously need to update the FAQ...

This whole "new 80GB" situation is downright dastardly. It's not really a new 80GB, it's a new 40GB. It's the 40GB model with an 80GB hard drive. But since the easiest way to differentiate between the models is to refer to the disk space, Sony will have no problem tricking the majority consumers into thinking they're getting a $100 discount.

No more BC.
No more flash card readers.
No more SACD support.

But 40 more GB!

Hmm...I guess I need to check the specks again...I did not see that they are including a dual shock controller on the "new 80gb model"...so what happens to "old 80gb model" is it phased out for a different model or will there be no top-line model

Sony is moronic with this.....I am no idiot but I am lost at what will be the $499 model??

wait... I thought the 40GB is BC with PS1 games and just PS2 games are not compatible. Wouldn't that carryforward to the new 80GB also?

Why are you hesitant on purchasing one now? The hardware has proven to be very reliable thus far. The big thing is, do you want BC for PS2 games, if so buy the current 80GB unit cause the one replacing the current 40GB wont support BC on PS2 games, only PS1.

Blu-ray player & PS2 BC has me seriously considering a PS3 purchase this weekend.

Edit: Guess I'd need to grab an HDMI switch as well. The 2 inputs on our TV are currently occupied by our cable box & HD-DVD player.

I agree..I have an Xbox360..really want a blu-ray player but prices on these things are too high
Not sure it is worth spending $500 for the PS2 BC(son has stopped playing the PS2) and a blu-ray player for now

I got two and I would certainly reccomend waiting bro. Good call.

BC is gone from now on as well unless you can snatch one up before the new version is rolling out. Sony's Peter Diller said that is going to be the only one offered from that point and the current stock is being cleared on all current SKUs.

Is it worth it as a Blu-Ray player alone???

Well, that was the easiest "large" purchase I've ever talked my wife into. Picked up the 80GB PS3 last night along with Lego Indiana Jones. SSX games are working flawlessly.

Yes, but it's only as good as the TV you output it to.

I have a Samsung 1080P 46-inch LCD HDTV coming soon. I'm considering getting the PS3 for a blue ray player. I have a P2 I purchased a year ago so BC isn't a big deal. Having full HD movie playback to the new HD TV is important and maybe the odd PS3 game if I like it.

Is that a 650 or 750 Samsung LCD? If so, Blu-Ray movies will look amazing.

There is a 550 as well, but I ordered the 650 with the 120 hz "auto motion" and higher conrast ratio. I will really need a blue ray player now!

What is the best deal I can get on a PS3? (ie, cheapest?)
