Hey now all you need are some decent games to play so the back ground downloading can take place, yknow, in the background.

That's what I was thinking. Xbox360 & Wii > PS3

FYI there was no Background downloading on the Xbox360 for atleast 6 months after the console launched.

Haha, all in due time peeps. Let us not forget that the 360 did not have this feature upon its' release, nor does the Wii even right now!

Cheers!

Background downloading the Sony way

We have recently obtained through our contacts in the industry a summary of a high level meeting of the major players involved in Sony?s network platform (NP). This meeting took place in early February and involved representatives from Sony Japan, Sony America, 1st party and world wide studios (WWS) developers as well SCE-RT.

The meeting primarily revolved around the upcoming 1.60 SDK update, due in late March (to coincide with the European launch of the PS3. Clarifications on the features which would and would not be present in the update were discussed, as well as future plans for further features. This week, we?ll be bringing you daily updates on a variety of areas addressed in this meeting. This will help form a clearer picture of where Sony is heading with its online platform, and how far it has come along in the few months since it launched.

Today we start with background downloading. Sony has let slip that background downloading will finally be made available in the 1.60 firmware update. Unfortunately, users will end up being a bit confused, and then frustrated by what background downloading actually entails. Background downloading only functions within the context of the Cross Media Bar (XMB). Specifically, there will be no downloading while the user is a playing a game.

Users of the Xbox 360 will be familiar with how background downloading is supposed to be implemented. On the 360, the only time a download is interrupted is when you are playing an actual online game (where your latency could be affected by a concurrent download), or when you are downloading a game update. The rest of the time, whether you?re in the dashboard, messaging or chatting to your friends, or playing a game, your background downloads continue.

On the PS3, when you enter a game, your downloads will be paused and queued up, to be restarted later when you exit back to the XMB. The reason for this is that the PS3 needs extra system resources (primarily memory) to do background downloading, and as such could affect game play.

New APIs were discussed which allow background downloading during less resource intensive sections of a game (such as the front end menu), but such functionality will only be considered once the 1.60 update is out the door. Even so, games would have to allocate extra memory need to be able to support this.

So, background downloading is coming in the 1.60 update, but only in an extremely limited fashion. Essentially, you have to remain in the XMB to make use of it. This is bound to rub some people the wrong way.

Doesnt that defeat the purpose?

Ughh...talk about rushing out nonsense...just wait till you figure out how to do it the right way...good lord. This must stem from how they designed the operating system and its memory footprint. Last I heard the footprint was huge...which I'm sure they reduce considerably when playing "games". The reducing of the memory footprint probably involves a lot of the objects that govern downloading...this in turn would make it impossible to allow background downloading while the system is playing games. Just a guess...but I would put my money on it.

maybe someone should tell them that what is described is not really background downloading for a game console.

Hahaha...wait until you guys see the memory footprint for their Home/Sims MMO/UI whatever that's coming this fall. Sony is f'ing clueless, glad I returned my PS3.

Well, it's an improvement nonetheless. Better that they push this somewhat minimal functionality upgrade out ASAP and keep working on the new background download API in the meantime than not even give that incremental update. Sure makes for bad PR though.

Very odd that they're considering new APIs and yet would still only allow downloading while actual gameplay wasn't occurring. The downloading must be a pretty unsuitably coded service to cause that much disruption. I'm guessing the Sony developers didn't think this one through at the beginning.

I think that is Sony's problem with a lot of the PS3's software.

The thing is, Sony was late to the party. They had the extra time, they got to see what the 360 did and what the 360 users wanted. They got to see MS add background downloading and got it see it work correctly months before the PS3 launched...

And now we get this.

I guess the 360 did have background downloading at launch, in the fact that I started a DL and watched TV until it finished

i agree.... and i think thats the root of the cause behind all of the hate for the ps3. is they had a whole year to refine their system and it still didnt come out anywhere near where the 360 was at that point (it was actually very similar in the gripes to the launch 360). if sony was asking you to pay a premium for their console they need to show you why spending the extra cash is warranted and their launch sure didnt do that.

it means that you can download while still surfing thru the menus right? Cause before, there was a download progress screen that wouldnt let you do anything until the downloading finished. I think that the 360 also only downloads when a game isnt being played.
