Two things:

number 1: Have you done any PS3 updates besides the one RIGHT when you bought it? that one IS going to take a long time since youre probably going from a stock ps3 to the most updated firmware. That one takes a long time, but every update Ive ever had since the original has taken max 3-5 minutes.

number 2: The only game install that has taken me a long time was Devil May Cry 4. That was a little annoying. every other game , demo or not, has taken a very small amount of time. 25 mins for a demo, while i havent tried turok (ill try it right now), combined with you sayin that the menus are "sluggish", I'm leaning towards something wrong with youre ps3. The ONLY menus for me that dont pop up right away for me are ones that access my network for streaming resources.

as far as the zoom feature....contact sony i guess :\

I just got a PS3 myself and the only thing that bugs me about it so far is the audio seems to pop in and out whenever you go from the dashboard to a game/dvd or vice versa. Not sure if it's something specific to my very dated speaker configuration of if this is true for all users.

Then, 5 minutes later a progress bar came up and moved about as slow as the download itself! Insane! As far as this aspect, the PS3 is a P.O.S.

Couldn't respond as I've never d/l'd a demo yet

2) Blu-Ray player lacks a zoom! I don't care about the elite people that say "Why would you want to zoom? That isn't how the director intended you to see it!" Well, by golly, I don't give a shit how the director wants me to see the movie. I want a zoom feature that any stand alone DVD player has. But, this PS3 lacks the zoom feature for DVD's and Blu-Rays, which makes it pretty much pointless for me now.

Zoom, didn't look for it as I don't think any of my previous players had it either.

3) All the firmware updates to the machine... Could they go any slower? Why does the unit take so long to shutdown? It takes like 15-20 seconds before it actually powers off.

FW and game updates do suck to process, but since you can use a memory card and d/l the FW ones on your PC and transfer it, I found that eliminates that bit of frustration. Some of the game updates still take a seemingly long time.

Now, once Blu-Ray won, I started looking into the PS3. Before this time, the PS3 felt like an inferior game unit. Blu-Ray was still iffy at that time so, in my opinion, the 360 was a better unit - excluding of course the reliability issues that it has.

So, I purchased my PS3 hooked it up and at first was impressed. The welcome screen and setup was pretty well polished. But then came time to actually use it... I have a few gripes with this system so far.

I don't know... I hate to be so picky but so far I really dislike this PS3. I thought it would replace my Philips upscaling DVD player, but since it lacks a zoom, I won't be using it except in rare situations.

:-( buyers remorse right now... If I didn't get such a good deal on this PS3, it would be returned ASAP. But, maybe someone has some solutions for me? If so, I'd be interested... I want to like the PS3, but right now I just aint feeling it.

I also went from a 360 to a ps3 like you. I really liked the 360, but I after dealing with 2 RRODs, I just sold the refurb 360 MS sent me and got a ps3.

1) I find them really annoying also, I was so used to just downloading a demo and playing right away on the 360. But the install feature is good for retail games because it reduces loading times.

2) I hate seeing black bars too, and usually there isnt much going on at the edge of the screen anyway so I have no problem using zoom. Luckily my tv has a zoom mode so I just use that.

3) There arent too many updates, so I dont mind.

The feature from the 360 that I miss the most is the the scaler. My tv's native resolution is 1080i, and the scaler on the tv isnt that great so the image looks a little blurry at 720p. Ps3 game tend to look worse already, and the lack of scaler makes the game look even worse on 1080i tvs.

Also, for some reason, if you specify that your TV supports 720p and 1080i, the ps3 will always run the game at 720p, even if the game supports upscaling. So when I want to play a game that supports upscaling, I have to uncheck 720p in the xbm and recheck it when I play a game that doesnt support upscaling. I wish it was like the 360 where games run at the highest supported resolution.

1. Downloads and installs used to be rather quick. I don't know why everything has slowed down. That is a reasonable gripe, but I just set it and let it go while I do other things.

2.

3. Similar to the first, but it happens much less often. Set it and leave it. Then just press the needed buttons to install it. Yeah, it takes a bit (and it used to be faster), but it's like the first.

Honestly, these are really dumb reasons to have buyers remorse. You seem to be WAY too picky...I don't understand how you even enjoyed the 360.

Have you tried, you know, playing games or anything? 1 and 3 take up such a small minority of time compared to how much I used and enjoy my system. 2...whatever.

It seems I was a bit dramatic to say 'buyers remorse' I suppose I was on edge as I had my cat put down yesterday and am mourning her loss. Those mixed emotions may have been magnifying these issues.

Whatever the case, the PS3 is here to stay. I am just dissapointed with some aspects.

I'm sorry for your loss.
To this day, putting my cat down was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

I can relate to the zoom issue. I myself hate black bars on any side. My tv has a few dif types of zoom and works great for TV and DVDs. Even if the material is WS it most likely is not 16:9 so I use zoom. Yea, a bit is cut off but not enough to deter from the video. I know where you are coming from.

1- Yeah, Dl's take long.

2- First time I've ever seen someone complain about zoom. I've never seen anyone use it. The lack of zoon makes the purchase worthless ??

3- Why does it matter if it takes long to shutdown? Do you actually stare at it as it turns off? I just leave when I press shutdown and I don't care.

This.

For #2 I assume you mean for DVDs?? Watching a Blu-ray movie in zoom seems really absurd to me. The PS3 would have to re-scale the picture and then you'd get minor pixelation due to the zoom.

Its a 5400 RPM Hard Drive, do you expect it to be fast?

I've pretty much peaked my internet using a PS3 so downloads do not take long, I got about 950kb/s and those (along with the firmware updates) dont take too long.

Installs to HD do

1. Wait, everyone seems to be agreeing with this point, but I've never experienced. Yes, my downloads are usually painfully slow, but the install never is. Am I missing something?

2. What?

3. Yeah, it does take a few seconds, but I don't see why that really matters. It doesn't take any longer than a PC. Even the Wii and 360 take a few seconds, although not quite as many.

#1 Install has always worked fine for me. Yeah it takes a few minutes, but damn so does a PC. Demos aren't going to magically appear on your hard drive in mere seconds. As amazing as it may seem, the hard drive actually does need time to write the bits to the disk.

#2 Probably didn't bother to put it in since literally no one except you uses it.

#3 I've had my PS3 for half a year now and have had two maybe three firmware updates. Infrequent firmware updates are not a reason to dislike a system, I mean damn, you're getting updated functionality for free and you complain?

These are trivial reasons to dislike the PS3. Read a book or something if these are causing you to lose sleep. This may seem harsh but you totally set yourself up for this type of thing.

1) The Xbox 360 demos do not require an installation.

2) Two other people in this thread already stated that they use the zoom feature too

Q: Could you please show me where I mentioned I was losing sleep over this?

Q: Could you please tell me exactly what I set myself up for?

I shall await your thought out responses.

Perhaps, but his response wasn't really harsh, it was just wildly inaccurate.

1. I'm also not sure why you download a demo and it isnt installed automatically since I dont think you can copy them or anything, but generally they install fast.
2. I wish there was a wide-fit/stretch for viewing 4:3 material. I use my TVs zoom instead.
3. I cant wait for the next FW update. In game XMB!

None of these are dealbreakers IMO. A dealbreaker is a RROD or paying for online. Its a console thats like a PC, which isnt a bad thing. The things you can do with it is amazing. Once you set up a uPNP server you have access to all your media and it turns into one of the best media machines out there. And there is, after all, its core function, which is games (and/or blu ray movies)! The three things that bother you seem minor considering what it can do. I can see possibly why your three points might annoy you, but dont quite understand why that makes the PS3 in general a disappointment. Maybe you should trade it for a 360 and just deal with the RROD. Then just wait for blu ray players to drop in price and maybe get one with a zoom.

1) And? It's really not a big deal - go do something else for the 5 minutes it takes to install.

2) Okay...a miniscule amount of people.

3) You set yourself up for a harsh response.

Seriously, even if you did get a good deal, take it back if these problems are such huge issues that you need to write a fairly lengthy post on them. The fact of the matter is the PS3 is the best price for what you get in terms of Blu-Ray players. It's far more than BR player - you can game, download movies trailers/demos, browse the internet, stream media from your PC, etc. And all you need to upgrade the PS3 to the newest Blu-Ray spec is a firmware upgrade - which you seem to have such an aversion to. I'm not trying to be an ass here I'm just helping bring this pointless discussion to an end.

But you are not helping to bring this discussion to an end by making innaccurate statements not to mention the use of strawman arguements.

In addition to that, this is a free forum. So if you thought this thread was pointless, why did you post in here? Additionally, why did you post more than once? It seems to me that this thread isn't so pointless as my first two points have been acknowledged by other forum members.

It seems to me that a lot of people have a difficult time respecting other peoples opinions. as evidence in this thread.
