Whatever the case, the PS3 is here to stay. I am just dissapointed with some aspects.

I'm sorry for your loss.
To this day, putting my cat down was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

Thank you for the kind words. It was and is extremely difficult.

If you want a zoom feature, maybe write a letter to Sony or post on their forums? They've added additional customer-requested features in the past. If you go online and get enough people supporting the idea, then they'll add the feature. It's really that simple. It'd be a basic firmware upgrade (although the remote doesn't have a zoom button...)

I don't like zoom. Sony probably noticed that most people dislike zoom, so they didn't include it on the PS3. That seems like an obvious choice to me.

I enjoy my PS3. Can't wait to play MGS4 in three days!

#2 Probably didn't bother to put it in since literally no one except you uses it.

#3 I've had my PS3 for half a year now and have had two maybe three firmware updates. Infrequent firmware updates are not a reason to dislike a system, I mean damn, you're getting updated functionality for free and you complain?

These are trivial reasons to dislike the PS3. Read a book or something if these are causing you to lose sleep. This may seem harsh but you totally set yourself up for this type of thing.

1) The Xbox 360 demos do not require an installation.

2) Two other people in this thread already stated that they use the zoom feature too

Q: Could you please show me where I mentioned I was losing sleep over this?

Q: Could you please tell me exactly what I set myself up for?

I shall await your thought out responses.

1) Yes, and they also run slower on average. If it's a demo for an arcade game, the install only takes 2 seconds anyway. I recall a lot of people complaining about long load times in many 360 games (especially Mass Effect) that could benefit from some sort of hard drive installation option.

2) You're still in a very small minority. 5 out of 10 million is close enough to zero

lol wut? 360 demos are downloaded to the hard drive and run without having to install. This is probably because they're downloaded in a state kinda like how you download an ISO. He's referring to PS3 demos being annoying to install (which they are) and how the 360 literally will play the game once it's finished downloading.

Also, installs do suck. Congratulations that you have something else to do while installing. I don't know about you, but when I download PS3 demos, I want to play them when they're done. I don't want to start up a video and stop it halfway through, I don't want to start up a game just to stop (or be unable to stop if it's an MMO) when it's done. The process is inconvenient and it only wastes my time.

No, just because I play PC games does not mean that I am used to it and have no problem bearing it. I have been playing consoles for even longer than PC games and I quite prefer the concept of "insert and play." Yes, this will happen every time after the install (unless it is uninstalled), yet that doesn't matter. Installing is something we've never had to do on consoles and is against the idea of a console being something quick and easy. But frankly, consoles are converging with PCs these days, so seeing processes converging over isn't really something to be surprised over.

But it feels more like we're suffering over Sony's poor design choices. The 360 has immediately-playable downloads. Sony chose a drive for their console that eventually forced necessary installs to improve playable frame rates. We're essentially putting up with the bad choices.

Now a couple bad choices in one generation isn't the worst thing. What I think would be worse is if Sony doesn't heed these grievances and try to make changes to either the Firmware/OS or include them in the planning of their next console.

I understand the zoom thing, its a bit anal, but some people feel better when it appears that the entire screen is being used to display a picture. No the display of black bars doesn't count.

The last firmware update for my HD-A3 took 30 minutes to download/install. Like it or not, to meet shortened product design cycles, all consumer devices are becoming more computer like.

I dont know if this is happening while you're installing but if you are downloading something while trying to install a demo it will SEVERELY slow down the times for both, cant really write 2 things on two different parts of a hard drive at the same time.

As for download times, I get faster download times with my ps3 but after install time it comes out to be about the same amount of time to get a demo running on my 360 as it does my ps3. On my PS3 I'm downloading in the neighborhood of 1mb/s which which my 360 never matches.

But I agree with you, when I first got my ps3 and had to go through the install process, I it was quite the let down.

What's up with the PS Store's download queue thing? I clicked download on a demo last night and then went to find something else when I saw it in the queue and when I added the other demo, the first one was gone. So I suspected it was done maybe? Nope, the stupid software won't download it until you click the second download button. Strange, you think if I tell you to download it once, I want it downloaded. If you back out of the queue screen, the download seems to go away too . I swear to God that Sony literally tries to make their features as user unfriendly as possible.

Yeah, that checkout screen nailed me the first time too. They seem to like to make you confirm things... like how it makes you confirm you want to turn the power off if you do it via the controller.

Well, that doesn't bother me too much actually. I think once I tried to just turn the controller off but almost turned the system off (I denied it at the confirmation screen). I just get amazed at how unfriendly the console can really be every time I use it. They may not be really large issues, but lots of small issues can be quite cantankerous after awhile .

Oh one thing I wish you could do... I wish they'd let you transfer PSP games from PS3 to memory stick rather than requiring the PSP to be hooked up. Not a big deal, but the fact that I can't find my PSP's power cable after I moved and my PSP is out of battery power would make that feature quite handy. But I guess adding charging via USB to the PSP would be a good feature too .

The install times on the demos do suck. Given that the Wii and 360 manage to avoid them, I'm not sure why Sony decided to go down that route with the PS3.

If I had to pick a few additional gripes:
1. No HDMI-CEC. I agree, not many people use it, but it would actually have been nice with my current setup, and Sony is supposed to be supporting it.
2. No SACD over HDMI, and no DVD-A support at all. The latter is understandable given Sony's corporate leanings, but the former is incomprehensible.
3. No proper IR support built in. Sure, I can spend $20-$60 to put it in, but a built-in IR port would have cost them 50 cents.
4. No stereo A2DP support for stereo headsets - they don't work at all. Don't tell me it's there - it's not. Google around before you tell me I'm wrong - just having BT-2.0 hardware doesn't mean you have driver/firmware support.
5. No hardware upscaling of PS3 games to 1080p, forcing you to rely on your TV's scaler. The 360 got this very, very right.
6. HDCP required for games over HDMI. Again, yes, it's true, don't "correct" me with "how it should be".
7. No bitstreaming for DTS-HD, DD+, or TrueHD. Don't tell me I don't need it - it's an option I would like to have, in case my receiver decodes better than my PS3. Clearly, Sony thinks it's something useful, as their new 820 and 920 receivers do support bitstreaming those formats into them.

WTF? I didn't know that. What was the point of that?

40 GB does not have SACD support. All other versions (20, 60, 80) do. SACD support is primarily through HDMI. I imagine it can play 2-channel through the analog outs, but the only way to get surround sound is with HDMI.

Mea culpa - it does indeed support outputting SACDs using Linear PCM over HDMI, but I should have been more specific: it doesn't support passing DSD over HDMI. That's a slightly esoteric feature, but it is something Sony should have included.

The PS3 also apparently plays HDCDs, which is a nice bonus.

Weird, I always thought it took a little time to shutdown because it was getting rid of some heat in the system. Kinda like a aftercooler effect. Seemed like a good idea to me!! The only issue I have is a popping noise coming from my speakers during some games.

Anyhow, my PS3s just sit around. I do not see myself buying 1 piece of software outside maybe MGS4 for it this year besides maybe a Blu Ray or 2. I even canceled my pre-order on MGS4. I will probably try to pick it up on the cheap later this year as I'm not really caring right now. It is a sad state of affair for my PS3s atm. The 3 games I have bought so far were very good and I could recommend to anyone. Uncharted, Ratchet and Resistance are the three although Resistance was somewhat just ok for me, but the other two are rock solid. Maybe in a couple of years things will come around for the console, but as of right now the 360 gets most of all my love and time. If anyone is still out their debating on getting one I would most certainly recommend waiting until at least the next price drop unless you are a high def movie buff.

Expect PS3 clustering to be patched in some time in 2011. yes thats right folks, no more PS4, just make use of all your PS3s sitting around!
