PS3 HDMI output to Displayport input monitor

I was able to successfully adapt DisplayPort to HDMI (laptop to HDTV) and it worked fine, including audio.

Plug this into your monitor and the HDMI cable into this:

But, unless your monitor has built-in audio and is designed to channel that audio via DisplayPort, you also need to output audio from the PS3.

I'm not sure how the PS3 would handle having the HDMI port AND the analog or optical audio outputs active at the same time.

It works just fine. The PS3 natively Supports dual audio output, meaning you can have sound both out of the TV and yout AV receiver. You just need to pick whatever output you are using in the audio settings menu.

It works fine.

I have my PS3 hooked up to both HDMI and Audio. It outputs sound to both so my surround and TV output audio. You can set it so that it only outputs to one too.

That won't work. That device passively converts a DisplayPort output into an HDMI input.

What the original poster needs is a device that converts the HDMI output on his PlayStation 3 into a DisplayPort input on his monitor. Searching the WWW I found a HDMI to Mini Display port converter for sale on Apple's WWW store, but I can't post the link here without it getting hijacked for some reason. If the monitor has a standard sized DisplayPort connector then a Mini-Displayport to DisplayPort adapter will also be needed.

Thanks for the replies, yeah I am running the optical audio output on my PS3 right now with a HDMI to DVI cord. The thing is, my monitor only has one DVI input, and I don't like the screen fuzziness from having to use the VGA cord (with DVI to VGA adapter on the GTX 285) from my computer. It just doesn't look as good as straight DVI to DVI.

My graphics card doesn't have a displayport output so I guess DVI output to displayport input works too but I'd like to spend less than 50 bucks most likely lol. Was hoping there would be a straight hdmi or dvi to displayport adapter but I was having trouble finding any when looking on google.

I looked on Apple's site, there is a belkin av360 hdmi to mini displayport converter, was that the one you saw Ross Ridge? It's so expensive at $149.95

Yah, that's the one. You might be able to find it cheaper somewhere else, but a device like that isn't going to be cheap.

Another option might be an HDMI switch in combination with a pair of DVI to HDMI cables or adapters.

That would probably work. if the graphics card on the PC has an HDMI output, you could an HDMI switch, with the output being an HDMI -> DVI cable. This might cause problems with HDCP.

If the graphics card only has DVI out, then you could do a HDMI -> DVI cable from the PS3 and DVI from the PC to a switch (http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10110&cs_id=1011004&p_id=4069&seq=1&format=2)

It should support up to 1080p resolutions, or the limits of single-link DVI. Maybe it's another limitation imposed by the switch. Might find a better switch out there that will do higher resolutions.

EDIT: From a review on Monoprice:

This is exactly what I needed to display my PS3 and PC on the same monitor. I can further verify that this works 100% with a 1920x1200 resolution. I also love the solid construction and the retro design of the unit. One point almost removed for the blinking light on the front, but solved in 2 mins with a small piece of electrical tape.

You're welcome! Hope it goes smoothly, sometimes video switching can be weird - monitors not auto-detecting the new input or issues with HDCP.
