Which really saddens me.

New release blu-rays are $20, and I've gotten tons of good deals (Dark Knight for $11, etc.). I think people still wrongfully assume blu-rays are expensive because they're "new." As for the quality? Well, people who still have shitty old CRT's need to not give their input, because those people are just all around irrelevant.

This is true. They've been out long enough now that you can find some good deals even in B&M stores. The brand new top releases are still expensive, but there's usually a couple movies ~$10 at Target or Best Buy that are recent and good Blu ray movies.

Anyway, Sony really needed a price drop. It's a good media box with some solid exclusives but it was still out of reach for a lot of people. Plus with all of the hacking shenanigans they need a boost. For anything multiplayer (or netflix) I still go for the 360, but the PS3 still has several games I like. Infamous 2 will probably be my game of the year, and Twisted Metal is coming next year.

I think he's wrong - I just don't think someone would consider a PS3 for BluRay. Quite simply, it's not the best BluRay player around anymore. It was quite a few years ago when all BluRay devices were within ~$50-$100, but now you can snag a BR player for under $100.

One of the failings has always been the lack of a bundled remote. For the novice users, fumbling around with a PS3 controller is a little much. Having to buy it separately kind of added an annoyance to some. To note, not bundling a HDMI cable in this day and age is almost criminal too. I know they want you to buy the overpriced ones in the store, but come on @ the PS3... I mean they don't even provide HD capable cables with it.

The one thing the Xbox 360 still has a head on, is backwards compatibility. Their latest console still plays all the other Xbox games the launch console did. To note, they aren't adapting more to be compatible anymore. But, with the PS3, you have just PS1 games. Unless you have an older console, they dropped PS2 entirely. I believe that greatly slowed their momentum. It is pretty clear as to why now. As you can see their new HD transfers of PS2 to PS3 games. Which from what I can tell, seems restricted so far to Sony games. Kind of seems pretty clear now to what their real motive for dropping the backward compatibility was.

We will see if the price drop helps sales any, though I am expecting there to be a 360 price drop in time for Christmas.

What I am wondering is if the next gen will stick with traditional hard drives, or move to SSDs. Only time will tell I suppose, certainly depending on their price point at the time

It's been two years since the last so a 360 price drop in the next couple of months is pretty much guaranteed.

traditional hard drives can still pack in way more space for way less money than SSDs so I would expect the next-gen to go that way. Especially as digital downloads grown more.

SSD in gaming systems just aren't feasable at the moment, especially when as Queasy mentioned all things going towards digital downloads. Its all about the online ecosystem now, buying physical copies at a retail shop is so out of style.

This is a juicy price point for me. I'll be buying today on Amazon. Never owned or played a PS3, and am excited to play:

Heavy Rain
Infamous
Demon's Souls
Uncharted
Ratchet & Clank

and a few others.

I thought of buying PS3 for Uncharted 1/2 and GoW3 until I realized I can watch the entire games on youtube.

I usually swing by the local Target's electronics section to see if they have any interesting deals, but one of the annoyances of Blu-ray is that I can't just say, "I like this movie, I'll buy it." I have to go and read reviews to make sure the transfer isn't awful. It happened to me once when I was going to buy 28 Days Later, and the review steered me away from it. The most popular example is probably Gladiator.

3D Blu-rays are probably the worst right now. If they want to push that technology, then they need to stop "filching" their customers.

Just ordered:

160gb slim PS3
Heavy Rain
Uncharted 1
6' HDMI cable

$290 shipped, will be here Tuesday.

I've never played the PS3 before, so I'm pretty stoked to try out the exclusives. Gonna get Demon's Souls before too long as well.

Also to note a funny, at the moment on Amazon, it is $200 for the 4GB Xbox 360, and it is $300 for the 250GB model. The separate 250GB hard drive is $90. Actually making it cheaper right now, to buy the cheap model and upgrade it... You can then take the 4GB flash to Gamestop or something for a little cash. Only value of getting the 250GB, is if you want the bundled headset.

Let us see if the Xbox 360 comes down in price any. I believe the PS3 is dropping to remain more competitive, also to fall more in line with Blu-ray players, as their prices are dropping as well. To note, they are the only players that supported every new feature released with a simple update. The only annoyance is having to update to use Netflix. It certainly works good when you combo it with something like Tversity as well. The Xbox 360 has always been kind of iffy in that regard.

The 4 GB flash ram is internal on the system board, and not "customer" accessible, ie you won't be taking this anywhere to sell/offload.

You can also be cheaper and flash the firmware on a Western Digital 250 GB drive to work as a the official MS one. There's a thread here about it. The drives are extremely quiet and cool.

I'm console-less right now. Just sayin'

What did you pay for Uncharted 1? I've seen a double pack of 1 and 2 for $20 new at Best Buy, and I'm sure you can get that cheaper elsewhere or used.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Resistance? Best Buy wants $19.99 for a pre-owned copy of Uncharted 1 alone.

You are agreeing with my point; which is it was a mistake for Sony to expect people to perceive extra value in the PS3's ability to play Blu-Rays.

Sony could have dominated the war with Microsoft by undercutting them on price for the console and price for online services. Instead they promoted Blu-Ray playback and expected to get top dollar partly on that basis.

Which obviously didn't work out. In fact, Sony completely screwed up Blu-Ray in terms of marketing, but that's another story.

Anybody have a CECH3001 and a 2501? What's the verdict on temperature and noise level differences between the two?

My PS3 got here this evening. It is one sexy looking machine.

OMG on the update and install times though. In this regard the Xbox has the PS3 beat hands down. It seriously took me over two hours to get up and running with GT5. And that may be a conservative estimate.

I know this significantly adds to the cost, but Heavy Rain with the Move and Navigation controller is absolutely awesome. I just can't imagine it being as cool with the sixaxis.

The PS3 is still an awesome Blu Ray player. Recent firmware updates enabled 3D support and HD audio as well.

How did Sony screw up the marketing? Most people say they can't notice the difference between Blu-ray and upconverted DVD. That's not Sony's fault.
