I've been running my ps3slim for 2-3 hours a night while playing valkyria chronicles and it seems only the air and the rear vent area does get pretty hot, but the rest of the enclosure is cool/barely warm. I have it standing vertically (fairly stable without the $24 stand attachment) on my desk connected to my monitor/desk speaker system currently, so it does get good ventilation.

Okay folks... he's talking about A SLIM, not the old fatties.

lol wut...no wai! thx!

We realize this...we just let him know that our PS3 "fats" also run hot, so it's no big deal.

My point was that we already know the fatties run hot. The slims are supposed to be significantly cooler, hence his concern.

For all ps3 slim owners here, does your console also get very hot?

I'm thinking he didn't really care about the fatties judging by what he posted. We all know they're built to take it.

Which is PRECISELY why I made sure to mention that the temps will likely STAY high on the slim model due to requiring LESS cooling. Engineering it this way keeps the PS3 quieter and prolongs the life of the cooling system (doesn't have to work as hard) and makes for less catastrophic failure should it ultimately die anyway (system is already engineered for higher temps, hence, possible instability with less chance of permanent or more serious damage once cooling system is serviced).

You act like it's impossible to reply relevantly with a fat PS3. Did you even bother reading?

Here, I'll bold it for you...

Thank you guys for all your responses. I think the suggestion to keep it standing vertically has resolved the problem. I played Resistance 1 (very awesome game btw) for about 3 hours today, and the PS3 is only lukewarm in about all the areas that were originally very hot. I'm not sure if it''s because having it sit flat obstructs air flow because i don't see any vents along the bottom. My suspicion is that having it stand vertically is a more natural way for the cpu heat to flow out through the back.

I'd suggest getting a vertical stand. The fatter PS3 stands mostly stably with out any kind of stand but Sony sells a stand for the slim PS3 for a reason... it doesn't have a big enough "footprint" to be safe. The HDD is very delicate.
