PS3.IGN
According a an article published in the May 17th edition of Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, the PlayStation 3 could be one of the most expensive mass-market videogame consoles ever created. Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars.

Youch!

Without even knowing the xbox prices?

$300~$360 is what most people are saying. (Rumours only though I think)
Take away some of the PS3 price because Japan seems to have more expensive things, and you get a $50~$100 price difference from XBox to PS3.

I doubt it is going to be $300-360

It sounds too cheap to me given that both PS3 and Xbox360 can be used as media centres

I know they have tv encoders, but I haven't heard anything about decoders. Are you sure about this? Media Center implies Tivo-like functions. If you're referring to being able to stream video or music from other computers on the network as being a "media center" then .

I'm still not clear on how PS3 is going to be a media centre beyond playing DVDs and Blu-Ray DVDs. The Xbox360 actually showed their media centre functionality and are loading with WindowsMCE extender software so that it can stream HD and regular video, music, pictures, and more from a Windows MCE machine.

PS3 has a buttload of unneeded slots and connectors though. Why two HDMI? For the 1% of the 1% of the population who can hook up dual HDMI screens? That and all the memory slots have got to jack the costs up really high.

I seem to remember PS2 debuting for about 400 dollars in Japan, so 465 isn't that much of a price hike.

Yeah seems fine to me. I'm not going to buy one anyway, so I don't care. Now, if they want to give me one... well I wouldn't say no

dude...its freaking compact flash and SD...that doesn't "jack up costs high"

I thikn the price of the Ps3 will reall be dictated by the price that the Xbox is released at.

I'm talking about the totality of all the extras not just compact flash and SD. There's those memory slots along with the 2nd HDMI port along with supporting 7 wireless controllers (why the odd number?) along with two ethernet ports along with a BluRay drive along with 7 USB ports. That all adds to the manufacturing costs.

USB ports and ethernet boards are very cheap...its not like they are using gigabit ports, they are standard 10/100 ethernet ports.

As for 7 wireless controllers...it proably just one upping the competition more than anything.

Didn't the PS2 sell for quite a bit more in Japan than it did in the US when it was released?

50,000 Yen = $467.

They said it will be less than 50,000 Yen, but how much less is it going to be? :Q

When the PS2 was $199 in the US, it was 25,000 yen in Japan, which is $234.
When the PS2 was lowered to $149 on the US, it was lowered to 19,800 yen in Japan, which is $185.
(Of course this assumes the exchange rates were about the same in 2003. Figures are from http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/031104ae.pdf)

Using that math, it will be ~$395 when released in the US if it is 50,000 yen in Japan, but I seriosuly doubt it will even be that high... maybe $350... I'd say $299.

And it's not due for probably another year which is time for prices to drop on components, manufacturing processes to mature, etc.

Don't think about retail prices of the video card. Nvidia could give the cards to Sony for just a dollar over manufacturing costs and still make millions.

Yeah, but the PSP is going for approximately $190 in Japan but $250 in the US right now. The dollar has dropped in value alot since the numbers you quote.
