The PS3 has to rely on the game to provide chat options, XBL does not. Big difference.

You seem adamant on doing thing the hard way because you don't want to pay for the better option. If unified voice chatting was offered free on the PSN, I'm sure you'd be using all the live long day, and you'd then have a good argument against XBL annual fees. However, until PS3 can offer something comparable to XBL unified voice chat, I'd GLADLY pay for it. It just makes things so much easier.

And just an FYI, I have 2 360s and 2 PS3 and I game with my friend online most of the time with my PS3. Why? Because he doesn't have a 360. When I play other friends on my 360, XBL is just so refreshing. However I do agree with the dashboard ads. VERY annoying. The PS3 has a much better home screen.
I have both systems. And I have stated I do love the party chat, especially when I am not playing the same game as my friends and still want to chat. I just don't see much difference between the actual online gaming on both systems. Other than party chat, I don't think that PSN users are missing a lot, other than ads.

I guess I am not understanding what you are saying here. Every game I play, before I even join a game, I send an invite to my friend and he joins. Now we are in a party and can figure out what game mode we want to play before we launch anything. I don't see how that makes it hard or anything. I enjoy the party chat function on my xbox, but that doesn't mean it performs better than PSN. You said it does, so I am wondering how it performs better? Give people some examples, instead of just saying it and hoping everyone believes you.

So a friend is playing a game on his PS3 (RE:5 for example) when you power on your PS3 (you're at the home screen). You send him an invite to join the lobby, but he can't join until he quits his game and joins the chat. Well he quits his game, you talk it over a little and decide you DO want to play RE:5 together. Well you then lose communication because the game has to start and he has to relaunch the game he was already in. Now I still can't talk to him until the game loads and the session is created and he REinvites me. An absolute pain!

This is what I've been saying as well. I just needed clarification on the chatting thing, but the actual gaming experience has been the same for me on both.

It's fun to rag on ads, though . Especially ones that shouldn't be there.

I agree. I don't feel like I am missing anything on PSN. I really don't feel like the service is worse too.

What's the attach rate on both systems? The people I know who have both systems rarely touch their PS3s. The 360 gets played while the PS3 collects dust. Saying Sony wins because they sell a few more systems that don't get played is silly.

Exactly... Similar scenario in something like COD. So much easier to manage a group people playing together. If a lobby breaks up in ps3, it's hard as hell to get the party back together. On Xbox, you just re-invite everyone that's currently in the party. I don't know, but to me it's worth it b/c on Xbox it feels like you're logged into XBL or it feels like your console is part of XBL, on PSN it feels like you're on a PS3 that is connected to PSN. I own all 3 consoles as well and have mw2 for both consoles. I never ended up picking up blops or MW3 for both though. I just dislike how PSN is handled even though I have some friends and family that play on ps3 as well. If it were a paid for service, they'd have the resources to make it a much better and streamlined service. On the bright side, there's always LBP and UC on PS3.

it comes down to which system sells the most cross platform games.

Hmm, good point. I know a couple folks who play both. I sold my PS3 long ago, and was given a 360 that isn't even plugged in anymore, though it's possible I might try it again at some point in the future.

I own both, and my got my PS3 mostly for BR. I can say I really don't use it at all, in fact I haven't turned it on for a couple of months, even then it was only for BR. I own three PS3 games and two of those only because Sony gave them to me in the "sorry we got hacked kit". My Xbox on the other hand gets powered almost every day.

Simple averages don't tell the whole story. The Xbox started selling considerably faster, then the PS3 took over, but ever since the Kinect launched, Xbox has been selling faster.

Yeah, I'm not sure I buy this article either. I have a feeling that the PS3 is going to get murdered in holiday sales because of Kinect, at least in the US. Maybe Europe and Japan will continue to balance the scales though.

Well thanks to this thread and just to add the info I've just bought a year of Playstation Plus for a whole $26.

Was four 3 month codes but still for that cheap and if only for saving my game saves "to the cloud" it's worth it IMO.

The discounted and free games are just icing on the cake.

Easily had on eBay with buy it now and they'll just email you the codes. No waiting for shipping.

A lot my friends seem to be buying PS3s now, I've been told by at least 4 people already that they're planning to purchase PS3s either Friday or Monday as their first (current gen) gaming console

well with the next Xbox around the corner next year why would you even bother to buy the old 360?

My brother was faced with a similar situation regarding a Wii for his kid for Xmas, and we actually know 100% for sure that the Wii U is being released next year unlike the next Xbox (still only a rumor that it will be released next year AFAIK). He went ahead and got the Wii for him now for some of the same reasons why buying an Xbox now isn't a bad idea. Some of the reasons:

1. Available now
2. Game selection
3. Possibly price -- the current Xbox might be cheaper than the debut price of the next one and has more games, etc.

I personally don't think the jump from the 360 to the next Xbox is going to be nearly as big as the jump from Xbox I to 360, but I admit I'm speculating and could be wrong. I think the one thing you will see improvement on is how the Kinect is used as supposedly, it is somewhat hamstrung with the current CPU in the 360 and that's why you see so many cooler things done with it on the PC.

This is my 4th, but the other ones were replaced by MS when my disc drive crapped out.
LOL, I'm on my first but it's only 3 years old and I don't use it a ton. Also it was one of the newer chip designs or something that were less susceptible to red rings.

Because a) they've come down in price quite a bit, b) the Kinect is a novel way to play games and the competing motion control solutions are considerably less compelling, c) the backlog of games is huge so tons of good games can be had for cheap, d) the next Xbox is still a rumor and 2013 is more likely.

There are probably more reasons, but those are sufficient. I bought the 4GB Kinect bundle today for $200 with $50 gift card. $150 is almost a no-brainer. My four-year-old likes to play Just Dance Kids without the controller. He doesn't understand he isn't getting any points that way, he just likes to dance without the controller. With Kinect, he'll be doing it right.

Now that I own all the consoles, I don't have to buy a game I want on a platform that isn't the best for that particular game. I'm OCD that way.

The kinect bf deals were insane. I wouldn't doubt they sold 1,000,000 additional units.

,... wasn't this suppose to happen when the PS3 1st came out?

How every fanboy was screaming "ownage"? How it will sell even at $600?

How the games will look light years ahead better than the 360.

Where are we with all of that noise anyway??

You do realize the PS3 had to catch up from being behind by a whole year worth of sales?
