The MGS4 80GB is using 90nm processor, so it's hotter, thus making the fan work harder. The 80GB core system is using 65nm processor, which runs much cooler, thus the fan doesn't have to work as hard. I had the MGS4 80GB and that sob runs hot and loud, though not as loud as the X360. I own the 80GB core now, and it runs cool and silent idle or loaded.

I have the same version, and when the fan comes on (which isn't all the time), the noise is definitely noticeable, although not loud. I've heard it when playing games and Blu-Rays. I haven't really noticed it when playing DVD's yet.

the loudest it gets is when first turned on. i dont ever hear it while playing games/movies

Mines is the same way, FuryofFive. I hear the fans when I first turn it on, & then it's dead silent.

I thought something was wrong with mine too, tk149. I saw so many post about how loud the PS3 was, that I did an experiment with mine. I stuck my PS3 in a garbage bag, to see if the fan would kick on. I forgot about it though, and left it for longer than I planned. When I returned to it, I had the whirling vortex of doom that vi edit described.

Thankfully, it wasn't damaged, and learned that I either I got lucky with mine, or you guys aren't giving your PS3 breathing room.

Do you guys lay your PS3 flat, or do you stand it up on it's side?

I lay my PS3 flat w/ plenty of space on all sides, though it's placed in an enclosure w/ glass door. Maybe I just have abnormally heighten senses, but the MGS4 80GB and core 80GB are like day and night for me in terms of temperature and noise level. The MGS4 80GB was always at a lvl 2 on vi edit's noise meter.

I lay mine flat, in an open air entertainment cabinet. My 60GB is practically dead silent when playing games or watching blu ray movies. The only thing I hear from my PS3 is the beep when its turned on! When I had the 360, in the same cabinet, it was noticeably louder...it was hard to watch HD DVDs because it was so loud. Didnt notice it as much when playing games, cause ya know, sound from the game is consistently louder than the highs and lows from a movie.

My 60GB is really quiet. Maybe it being ~18' away helps, I dunno.
I have the 40GB PS3, my bro has the 60GB PS3 with backwards compatibility. His PS3 is at least twice as loud compared to mine. Not as bad as the 360, but up there.

I have a 40GB PS3 and it is silent. I much prefer it to my 360, one of the originals without HDMI. I have had a grudge with Microsoft ever since I got my PS3 really. I don't like that I got screwed as an early 360 adopter and don't have HDMI now. The "pay to play online" bullshit is just icing on the cake. Fuck monthly fees.

Edit: I should note, the 360 is now only used for my kid to play downloaded demos of Shrek, Cars, Spider-Man, etc....until the inevitable RROD strikes.

My 60GB launch PS3 is dead silent, and it's located right under my desk vertically. Perhaps having it vertically helps with the ventilation since heat rises? The only time the fan was noticeable was when my room was really warm.

The PS3 isn't usually loud, but sometimes its noticeable during BD movies.

I usually lay my PS3 horizontally on the bottom shelf of a coffee table. There's a lot of room above it, and the front and back are wide open. The right side (where there's an exhaust port - it would be the top if placed vertically) has a lot of open room.

I tried placing it vertically on the floor today, and haven't noticed the fan at all yet.

The 360 is my easy, no-brainer choice. My roommate has a PS3, and I simply cannot stand the controller. The PS2 controller was fine for me (although I definitely preferred the Xbox's Type S), but to me they just simply ruined the design. The R2/L2 "triggers" are a massive, massive design flaw. How the hell are you sposed to keep those held down when they have a convex shape, which is completely counter-intuitive? Also, Sony almost completely eliminated the resistance of the joysticks, making them move around way too easily for me. For games that require precise manipulation of the joysticks (yes, go ahead and laugh at that line), the 360 just works leagues better for me because of the tactile, spring resistance in the sticks.

Also, to whoever said that the 360's online service is "arguably" better, you have obviously not tried playing games on both systems. While paying $50 a year is a bummer, the online experience for any game is tremendously better than using PSN. Try getting into a game of COD4 on PS3 with your buddies, then try it on 360. There's absolutely no comparison.

I picked up a 360 last year and haven't had any issues. I like the feel of the controllers and the overall quality of the system....despite those who have had problems in the past.

I would have gotten a PS3, but when it came down to the game library and community support, the 360 is much more popular. I read a thread from a game developer that stated programming for the 360 is much easier as well. He stated that the instruction set the PS3 has to offer is likely superior, but the learning curve and marketshare is going to push developers to design games for the 360 first and port them to the PS3.

So if you REALLY want a flashy PS3 game that's going to blow the doors off anything the 360 has to offer, it will most-likely be designed by Sony. For the relatively low number of games that hit this level, I suggest buying a 360 and hoping that Microsoft allows your current game collection to be played on whatever their next Gen system turns out to be in 2-3 years.

Frankly the idea of paying a monthly bill to play video games online makes me really, really angry, I don't know why.. I'll probably never get over it, but that's just me and that's mostly why I picked the ps3 over 360. Otherwise, I consider them to be more or less equal. Fanboys on either side piss me off.

You don't need to play monthly, in fact that's the worst way to do it. 12+1 month cards can be had for $40 or less now which makes it just over $3 a month which I feel is a very reasonable price to pay for a good service. While Playstation home may be free, if you compare the online services only, not the consoles themselves, I still feel that Sony is waaaaaay behind MS in this category.

I'm not a fanboy, I've always considered myself console agnostic, I received the 360 and the wii as gifts and have had a great time with both. I do not own the PS3 and truthfully the only thing that has held me back is the fact that there aren't more than a few titles that are ps3 exclusive that I feel I need to play. Personally the only one that has been close is MGS4, aside from that I really don't know of many others, maybe LBP.

im gonna join that club that owns both... ps3 besides beign a game machine, is a nice Blu-ray player, and serves as a HTPC. which works nice if you know how to convert video's over.

what the ps3 lacks is where the 360 picks up, and vice versa

360 has a better selection of games, but the ps3 i think has more functionality. which is why id get both. and will soon

that's another thing I really like about my ps3, being able to watch the movies and TV shows that I had already downloaded, but it wasn't on my mind when I bought it so I can't say it affected my decision.

Out of curiosity however, how is the 360 in this regard? Can it handle the same video file formats?

free does beat 40$ , but too be honest. i had a 360 for a couple days. downloading the demos and playing them. wow. so much faster than ps3... download rate is about the same, but when you goto play the games, with ps3 you ahve to install them which takes anywhere between 5-15 mins. with 360. its usually good to go.

It's funny that I've never heard an Xbox Live subscriber complain about the price, but so many people who don't subscribe complain about it. It really is worth it. You think it's hard to beat free, but Microsoft did.

Yeah, pretty much. I don't know exactly what codecs are supported by each, but with TVersity it doesn't matter much.

Exactly why I won't buy XBox 360. I don't understand why they even have a fanbase with their shoddy hardware. XBox users really need to stand up to Microsoft concerning this issue. Wasting money on a badly engineered console is just

I like the Xbox 360 in my opion and heres why:

* Price is the best
* Games
* Seems to have lots of exclusive DLC for there games
* Can download old Xbox games, as well as movies
* The multiplayer is way better!! Free isnt always good...lol
* Load times are way better than PS3
* The new dashboard that will be coming out looks amazing and add lots of new features!!

I like the PS3 as well but I think the Xbox 360 wins hands down mainly because of the price...but I cant wait for a new Kingdom Heearts game for the PS3

And I also heard MGS was coming out to the Xbox 360 on a two Disk set(probably some extra features and also probably to big for normal DVD) so if thats true....what does the PS3 have that will beat a Xbox 360?

MGS4 came out on a Dual-layer blu-ray. That is 50GB of data. Even if you have a 2 disc set of DVD, it still doesn't equal to the 50GB blu-ray. 2xDVD @ 9 GB = 18GB.

heh a dual -layer dvd is even less than 18 gigs. when u consider formating. and 8.5 becomes i believe 7.9.. now ur down to 16gb.
id ont know how many extras ur thinking of getting. maybe like a banner that says i bought this game?
