I think something like that is likely. Even if its a dock that charges your phone and provides full size HDMI out, etc. We're just starting to see devs take mobile games seriously along with stuff like controllers, etc. Give it a year or two to work itself out and we might have something interesting.
Indeed but they will still be years behind of a Console or PC.
There is just no way around the "more watts = more power" problem.
Anyone else notice that the entire article used by the original poster is constructed around a flawed question ?
developers which platforms they had last developed for, which platforms they were developing for now, and on which platforms they planned their next game
Everyone knows consoles are a mature market in the US/Europe/Japan (which historically is the main target).
Yes, your "console buyers" are now older, no one above 35 had a NES, while today it's common for them to have a PS3 or 360...
Of course you still have Latin America, Asia, Africa.... which have almost 0 consoles.
But when a "decent pay" in Latin America is 400$/m you can imagine that 499$ consoles wont sell that easily.
Not to mention phones are usually subsidized which helps a LOT.
Now to get into Phone Gaming :
- It's the fastest growing market in the world
- The entry barrier is nonexistent (you dont need 100M$ to make an AAA game).
- F2P model promotes micro-transactions
- You could be the next Angy Birds & Puzzle Dragons (or even Farmville)
I do agree that the console market is deeply flawed with it's 100M$ to make Call of Modern Madden N°25 and it's 70$ games.
But it's not dying, it still has 4 billion potential customers....
An interesting question would had been "which % of your manhours is dedicated to Phones vs Consoles vs PC"
Yes Call of Modern Madden N°25 sold for 1.5 Billion after a 100M$ Dev Cost.
Angry Birds made 20M ? 30M ? 40M ? for what less that 1M Dev cost ?
i'll let you guess which is more appealing and with lower risk
Edit : fixed a small mistake.
