The fact that you put Ryse as "very good" just goes to show how far the bar has fallen. It's barely passable, even as a launch title.
It's also disingenuous at best to argue the value of a "killer app" as meaning a game that 'every single person in the world had to buy'. That's never, ever been the definition, nor is it ever the expectation. But to deny the importance or significance of one is just foolishness.
Obviously there will be people who don't care for even the best of the best of games. The difference is, those people are in the vast, vast minority , especially in cases like Mario.
The consoles will sell for a myriad of reasons in spite of their libraries right now. Let's not delude ourselves though about the strength of the software. That will come in time.
Have you played it? I'm thinking you haven't. Every single person I've seen who has played it that isn't paid to give their opinion on a website and generate page hits has enjoyed it and said it is a very good game. Myself included.
Mario 64, case closed. Still GOAT.
None of the titles you listed make you want to buy a console. We all figured out what games to get AFTER we got the console. Please, nobody is saying damn I need an X1 for Ryse (lawl?). Oh snap, we've never seen Forza, Assassin's creed, COD, BF4 before...
The games will be coming, but not this year.
Kingdom hearts 3 and FF15 - those are worthy of console purchase.
I bought the XB1 for Killer Instinct and Forza 5 yes because they are both games I'll play for 100s of hours. I bought my PS4 for Killzone and multiplatform games that would be a little bit better than the XB1 version. Turns out Killzone wasn't as good as reviews stated and Ryse and Knack are better than reviews stated. I knew for months what games I was interested in and probably going to buy on the two consoles. With the internet these days you have near daily updates on these games. Screenshots, videos, previews, new info etc. Heck I think Destiny has had 4 different trailers in 2 months and that game won't be out until April I believe. You'd have been better off saying "you didn't buy the console to play those games." because a blanket statement about how I determine video game purchases doesn't work. I did indeed buy the system because of certain titles. Also note that there will be a good number of people who think Final Fantasy is dead, so another blanket statement doesn't fit here either. What about people who don't like JRPG games?
Mario 64 isn't even close to the best game ever. Not even for a launch game to me. When it released I did not care about it at all and in many ways I still don't. I didn't buy an N64 until it had Ocarina of Time at which point I played Mario 64 just because there was nothing else I cared about. Plus by the time Ocarina of Time released on N64 I had already finished Metal Gear solid on PS1 which set a new bar for me in story telling and creating an experience.
For someone interested in an XB1 or PS4 who also liked shooters, playing BF4 with 64players which is on par with the gameplay experience on the PC is not to be missed. When the game works It's fantastic, but DICE/EA has numerous issues with this title which sullies the enjoyment just a bit. Many of the same titles someone might get for a 360 or PS3 also come to XB1 and PS4 (Cod, Madden, NBA, AC, NFS, BF) with an overall better experience. So yes there are plenty of valid reasons someone would buy one or the other or even both to play the exclusives which are actually good games despite a number plastered on a website to get clicks.
