PS4 controller works on PC

Thought some here may find this interesting. Wired only though. Works using the same mini-usb that most android smartphones come with. Anyway it works, no driver trickery like PS3 controller. I'm downloading Dirt 3 and going to test it's analog triggers to see how they work.

I got my PS4 and after plugging it into my PC here's what I got. No drivers needed, windows just recognized it and all the buttons function. The touchscreen also acts as a button when pressed down. The triggers are recognized as X rotation and Y rotation and the analog slider in the test screen moves as it should. Might be able to get them to function as analog but I don't have any games installed that can use analog triggers at the moment.

I have zero interest in using a controller, but that's pretty cool.

That is pretty cool. My next console is going to be PS4 and this is just cherry. Let us know if the force feedback works in Dirt3. Thanks OP.

How comfortable is it compared to the x360 pad? Just curious. I really felt like the x360 pad was far more comfortable than the PS3 gamepad. I might give this a whirl if it's good, though.

Looks like it actually has a decent d-pad and not the shit-stain that the xbox 360 controller had. I might have to get one when I have a chance.

The Playstation controllers have always had excellent d-pads. The controller is really comfortable, my friend brought his over after he picked it up. From everything I read around online, everyone seems to love it as well that has tried it/held it.

I feel it sits better in my hands than the Xbox controller. The whole thing is matte except for the circles that the d-pad and face buttons sit in. The back is textured but it's a very fine texture which made me think it was rubber at first. The sticks have more tension than the PS3 controller for sure and are closer to the Xbox in that way. They are also better textured than the PS3 controller and although my 360 controller is worn down I think they are better textured than those. None of the buttons are squishy and all have a solid end to their movement, even the analog triggers are solid with a good amount of tension and the same solid end to the arc motion. They(the triggers) also have tabs that stick out slightly so you have something to press on, they are also concave now so your fingers can rest on them. The DPad is raised up a bit more than the PS3 controller and is now 8 way instead of just 4 way buttons. It's also more concave allowing perhaps better control for games that would use the dpad. Probably the best thing for me is you have more space between the analog sticks and the d-pad and face buttons than the PS3 controller. Allowing you to not feel so cramped.

I prefer this to my Xbox 360 controller, but my 360 controller has gotten a ton of use over the years on my PC and shows it's age.

edit: Tried Dirt 3 and while you can sorta get it to work by remapping the keyboard to the controller buttons you can't get analog working because it appears Dirt 3 is specifically looking for an Xbox controller and doesn't seem to know I have a different controller that is recognized in windows.

edit2: So I downloaded an xbox360 controller emulator. The game now works fine with the DS4 controller but no vibration functionality at all. That part probably will need special drivers to be written. Oh well.

This is a great plus OP.

I do prefer the Xbox controller layout, but I actually get sore wrists from the weight of it. Hopefully with the slightly redesigned R2 and L2 on the PS4, I will enjoy it more than the PS3 controller.

It needs the xbox 360 controller emulator app to create Xinput files for the games that do not function with it directly, but then it works just like the 360 controller. It will also need some sort of driver to get the vibration functionality to work in the future. It's an alternative if someone is getting a PS4 but doesn't have another controller that will work on PC.

You know xone controller will work with PC, is a MS product and so is windows. They will make it work.

They already announced as much and it will have full support. I don't think Sony will write a proper driver so we will be stuck with what we have now. Emulate a 360 controller with varying results (It didn't seem to work in dark souls) and get no vibration, or someone writes a 3rd party driver like motion joy.

This was just a test I wanted to perform. It does work in basic form but it's not functional across the board.

OP can you try BF3 and post some results?

Thanks.

It works basically but I can't get it to configure for vehicles.

Thanks.

That sucks for the vehicles.

We all need to gang up together and hit DICE for full support on the PC, would be sweet.

And while i do like the keyboard better for some things, i have a friend that has back problems and cannot play with the keyboard for any extended period of time, but is fine with controllers.

That was in case someone will come over and hound me about keyboard being better than console controller.

The X1 controller won't get full support until next year.

Oh I think that was known by most interested in this stuff but at least we know the support will come. With the ds4 I like the controller but it is only basically functional on PC right now.

it's supposed to be the other way around! give us KB+M for consoles and then i might consider buying a console.

So is it mini or micro USB? The OP is confusing... he says "the same mini usb most android phones come with" except most phones use micro usb, not mini. The PS3 used mini-usb.

Does it rumble properly? The X-box controller is great and doesn't need additional setup or twiddling around to make it vibrate.

Go nitpick some more. It is the same cable as your phone. That was clear
