Got my 4.50 code email from PS noon yesterday PST and immediately left work early, it's a Friday anyhow and installed the update. Always, always make a backup! It's very simple and takes only 5 or so minutes to backup everything minus game installs.
PS4 games I have without the pro patches are Fallout 4, Darksiders II, and Uncharted Collection. Fallout 4's patches are coming out next week. Reading many early reviews from others matches my experience where many games appear to be capped at 30. I really didn't notice much difference with F4. Same 30 target FPS as before with stutters here and there due to CPU multitasking texture/game data streaming. DSII was already 30 FPS, no difference with beast mode.
I haven't installed the Uncharted Collection yet, perhaps later this weekend. Uncharted 1 @ 60FPS would be killer and very doable, they already do 60FPS with multiplayer with one of the Uncharted games.
What was interesting was Return to Arkham's Arkam City. There was a patch that Digital Foundry found enabled beast mode with uncapped frame rates reaching 40s-50s, but a 2nd patch was released that capped it at 30. Well you can install off disk without any patches and to me at least it does seem at least 30 with beast mode. I am not measuring the frame rates. There's no need. Any person can tell the difference between 30 and 60 FPS without metrics.
So, so far, in beta release Beast Mode gives us our money's worth with the extra power in the PS4Pro to reach minimum 1080p/30 for all games, instead of artificially downclocking it. It's not 60 for all games, but I'm not complaining. You know damn well MS's Scorpio is going to have Beast Mode, might as well call it Best Mode. These are good times for console gamers and I wouldn't be too surprised to see a boost in sales.
By the way, the external drive feature works very well. Almost as good as MS. When you remove the drive the game is installed on you just get a nice exclamation mark and when you run it tells you to insert the drive. I still plan on testing to see if you can use multiple different drives, or different drives at any time and if you can use that drive on another PS4 and play the game as long as you have the game disk or login, if it's a download.
