Let me take a minute and explain the theory behind wearing middle school children's backpacks to work: you don't.

A middle aged (indian) man, wearing business casual or better, has very little in common with a 12 year old girl and the backpack follows that pattern. Unless your daily commute includes a hike over the Whistler, there is no need to wear one.

Also I wanted to touch on a special case of this - wearing a full suit and a backpack. You definitely don't. That combination essentially nets out to wearing pajamas to work.

Thanks for your cooperation,

the professional world

The only time I have a backpack with me is if I go to the gym before work. But then again I wear jeans and a polo to work, so it probably doesn't look that unusual.

I'm not Indian BTW

But the backpack is so convenient. It doesn't take up a hand like a briefcase. Next you'll rag on my fanny pack.

Everyone here at work seems to have a regular waart backpack but me. Three of four are of Indian ethnicity, but every one carries them.

This is one of the worst rants I've ever seen here in ATOT, and I've been here for a long time.

Most engineers where I work have a backpack. I think if you bust your ass in school enough, it's hard to let the backpack go (assuming you used a backpack in college).

Yep. Sometimes I grab the backpack but only if transporting a couple of laptops + other stuff. Carrying that crap in a satchel is awful.

Only time I wear a backpack is when I'm riding the motorcycle to work and only then because I have my work clothes in there.

Oh no,
I'm talking about multiple indian guys getting out of 1 toyota, putting backpacks on, over their business casual attire, and walking to work.

It definitely does come off unprofessional. I considered going with one for the convenience (as my consulting firm doesn't care), but I decided against it due to working with a lot of different clients with different "professional" expectations. It is awfully convenient though...and I'm not indian.

Do you think there's any connection between this and the TMNT backpacks sized for first graders but worn by 16-20 year olds?

waitaminute... are you hating on backpacks in general or are they wearing packs branded with stuff like the Powder Puff Girls?

Probably the later, at my last job the Indian contractors would have a Tie on but then throw on a obvious kids backpack.

OP: I'm your worst nightmare. I wear a backpack whenever it is convenient to do so and I carry my briefcase when ever it is convenient to do so, and often both. I have one of those suitcase style Samsonite briefcases which is great for carrying electronics in the field. During field work requiring camping out, I've been known to crawl out of my tent in the morning with briefcase in hand. Likewise, I'm one of those goobers you see walking through downtown Chicago wearing suit jacket and and a backpack. Whatever works. The briefcase was a gift from a former manager who was bothered by the cloth shopping bags I had been carrying to work.

Whatevs, I use a backpack to carry my laptop and stuff to work. Of course it isn't a kids backpack though.

I think you are you own worst nightmare, my friend. Your faux pas is no impediment to me

Agreed. I'm fine with mid-sized messenger bags as briefcases are way overboard in formality for most of us, but backpacks don't belong in the workplace.
