The worst part, is this is more common than people are giving the OP credit for. There are some strange guys in the world with some strange cultural backgrounds where they have habits that they think are okay with everyone else. But truthfully I see more fanny packs being worn than the little backpacks. I have seen a fanny pack with a suit, but not a backpack though.

Please do the needful.

I work with a lot of Indians (a web service company of sorts, so lots of programming). It's funny because even some of them make fun of the others that use this line constantly.

But as to the OP, I've never seen any of them wear children's backpacks to work.

You only get this behavior from those that weren't born here and went to school here as a kid. Even then, you sometimes get an odd ball that was a bit too sheltered growing up by his parents and cultural community here in the states. This actually pertains to people of all ethnicities.

I've seen some strange people do some strange stuff in my time that they don't realize is way outside the cultural norm for the area they are presently in.

Let me take a minute and explain the theory behind wearing middle school children's backpacks to work: you don't.

A middle aged (indian) man, wearing business casual or better, has very little in common with a 12 year old girl and the backpack follows that pattern. Unless your daily commute includes a hike over the Whistler, there is no need to wear one.

Also I wanted to touch on a special case of this - wearing a full suit and a backpack. You definitely don't. That combination essentially nets out to wearing pajamas to work.

Thanks for your cooperation,

the professional world

Wow, this post is on the money. I have a co-worker who fits the bill exactly...

So what's the thinking behind that? Do they do it because it's quirky, cute; because they're cheap? ...

So, everyone who replied in this thread is Indian? (except for me)

Well I'm kind of beige, and while the OP is full of [redacted], I object to backpacks purely on a stylistic level. The best you can expect are pretty much the Tumi kinds of packs and these still just look wrong.

The problem primarily comes from those who buy the 'one size does all' notebook, buys a honkin' great big machine that would result in agony if carted around in a perfectly nice messenger or document bag.

Apparently the netbook evolution has passed some people by - well, admittedly I threw away my first netbook in a matter of minutes, seeing it for what it was and not wishing to revisit a poorly-made version of a machine I had >3 years ago, but for those not expecting miracles I'm sure netbooks works for many people as an everyday carry if they have more horsepower stashed away somewhere else.

If you then have a machine which can last all day without the AC paraphenalia, then your load is considerably lightened as well.

Only when you do actually need power when moving site-to-site, well - you can do what I do which is to buy multiple machines and sprinkle them around homes/offices, but I realise that's probably not an option for most - then unfortunately then you need the backpack.

Weak rant! Majority of the people who are not partners in consulting wear backpack. Do you know how hard it would be for your back and your posture when you travel and have to carry a standard issue laptop bag? Now why do you think places like office depot has an entire section with backpacks? You think kids go there and buy them?

Stories from the professional world:

When I started my job, we were all given a backpack with a laptop sleeve and a company logo on the outside. Use it regularly and great for business trips.

Oh really? Little kids go to office depot and buy $100 backpack?
Pretty sure they aren't all $100. But sure, in middle/high school and college most of my school supply shopping was done at office depot or similar.

Lol I could tell you to get a clue but then you are probably still in school so it's alright. Office supply stores carry backpack targeted at working professionals. Kids are not their target customer segment. Parents are most likely to go to places like Target to buy their children's school supplies.

I'm not in school. I also bought a laptop backpack from office depot for college, and I know a lot of other students that did as well.

I lug my work-issued T400 on daily basis and walk the very same route as the said indian males... This isn't a 5 mile hike with 100lbs worth of equipment, it's just bunch of IT dudes walking to their office job.

Your boobs probably provide much needed support for your laptop.

I see a couple (half) Indians wearing backpacks everyday but they are my 7YO and 5YO boys.
I have a canvas Booq messenger bag to transport my work laptop but also have a leather Coach bag for court.

Hmmm this is what I intend to wear to work. How else do I get my shit from A to B while on my skateboard? Yes, I'm being serious.
