Fully discharging a Li-Ion battery will destroy it. That's why devices have battery management circuitry that shut off the device before the battery is fully discharged.
It's also why you should store devices partially charged. If a Li-Ion battery self discharges to a depleted state it will no longer function.
When I had an iphone, it literally took less then 15 minutes from walking into the store, them looking at the phone, transferring everything over to a replacement and me walking out the door.
