Mine haven't had any problems with Canidae but I usually mix it with whatever other high end dog food Petsmart has marked down. They almost always have a bag or two that is ripped or about to go out of date and marked 50% off when I go there. May try something other than Canidae though next time since I just finished buying enough to get my free bag.

Its a dry food so it has to be in meal form? Whats bad about ingredients being a "meal"

Meat vs Meal as defined by the FDA, which has authority over pet food labels:

"For example, "meat" is defined as the "clean flesh of slaughtered mammals and is limited to...the striate muscle...with or without the accompanying and overlying fat and the portions of the skin, sinew, nerve and blood vessels which normally accompany the flesh." On the other hand, "meat meal" is "the rendered product from mammal tissues, exclusive of any added blood, hair, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents." Thus, in addition to the processing, it could also contain parts of animals one would not think of as "meat.""

dubious of who funds this..never mind the standards for their "findings"

anyways theres nothing "green" about feeding your dog the best. its actually wasteful, the dogs get the scraps off the live stock carcasses after we pick off the best bits and thats just fine, its economically and environmentally wise, the parts are still good, its just humans are too picky to eat it.

Your dog needing protein and not grain isnt a fad.
And science diet apparently wasnt a fad just like Bose isnt a fad. Its all about marketing. The vets probably got kickbacks from someone.
Ever look around a modern doctors office? All their pens and notepads and clipboards are sponsored by some drug company.
First off, I'm talking about cats. Maybe there's a difference, maybe there's not. I don't know.

Second, what real evidence is there that grain free isn't a fad? With all the fuss over grain, you would think our cats should weigh 15 pounds. They weigh about 10 pounds and have a healthy coat, so I have no evidence that they are not getting good food. If there is a brand of cat food about the same price as Science Diet (~$0.90 a 5.5 oz can) that is demonstratively better than Science Diet, please tell. All I see is theories over which ingredients are better than others with no medical/dietary evidence which is a lot like the latest health food trend. Yes, marketing got us to give our cats Science Diet, but marketing again is trying to get us to feed a different, much more expensive food.

ah I see, I found a site that helps define the ingredients. But it seems Meal could be both grind up the left overs or the good stuff.

This site is legit. I can pick up a bag of dog food anywhere and tell if it's crap or not by looking at the first 5 ingredients. All of your major brands, eg. Purina, Science Diet, Kibbles & Bits, etc are all garbage, made mostly of filler.

My dog has been on a raw meat diet since shortly after I got him. For times that it's not practical\possible to get him raw meat, I keep a bag of Solid Gold Wolf King on hand.

Dogs are made to eat meat. I've seen several dogs changed from a big name dog food diet to a raw meat\healthy dog food diet and their energy levels increase, and they look much healthier. My dog is a little ball of muscle and energy.

Where is walmart dry (think it's called sams best) with table scraps including but not limited to potatoes, bacon grease, bird bones, steak bones, spaghetti and whatever else I feel like throwing them? Site is ridiculous. As with humans it's exercise and you can eat whatever you want and live a long long time.

PS My dogs are $25,000 hunting labs and I feed them like that and doc who happens to hunt with me says they are a picture of health. Why because they run miles every day. When I'm not playing flippy flopper with them, i train them, or their in the pool or pond swimming, or running around. They get at least 4 hours solid exercise a day to be prepared and discipline in the field (hence their value) and I don't care what you eat you get 4 hours aerobic exercise a day you'll be tight and healthy.

Cooked bird bones are demonstrably bad for your dogs. Starch & carbs are suboptimal fuel for your dogs' metabolism; they are protein driven machines. When I'm home, my dog runs 8 miles a day with me, plus whatever it is he does during the day while I'm gone at work (he has free roam of a lot of land.)

I do leave a lot of meat on the bones Like thighs we don't even eat off ducks and chicken. I just hate seeing food wasted and they have zero problem filling that void. Garbage disposals even more than their daddy (me)

What kind of dog you got Nebor? 8 miles is pretty nuts considering they don't sweat and cool like us...you bring any water along?

Proper nutrition and conditioning, like humans will give dogs the energy to go long distances. My old ridgebacks could go mountain biking with me 10+ miles easy and they'd be chasing one another and playing while I was packing up.

My current ridgeback I hope to turn into a marathon training partner.

Pretty crazy. I once had a pitbull could do it but not my labs especially when I like to run...hottest point in the day 100F in summer. My Shepard is 13 but she could never do it even in prime. Short hair vs. long hair makes a huge difference. Now I'd like to see that ridge back swim through a frozen pond to get a duck. over and over and over again.

He's a chihuaha\rat terrier mix I think (pound puppy.) I run 8 miles a day, and 16 miles on Saturdays when I'm back at Fort Polk. He usually sprints ahead of me, then waits for me to catch up. He also chases squirrels, rabbits and deer as they appear in the woods off of our running trail. He's very, very fast, and has a 6 ft vertical leap (much to the surprise of most squirrels that stop 5ft up the trees )

I want to say he looks like a Manchester Terrier. Too big to be chihuaha/rat no?

Yeah, he's a great dog. I cook breakfast for us every day (1 scrambled egg and 2 pieces of bacon for him, 3 eggs and 2 pieces of bacon for me,) come home and take him out to play at lunch, and then make dinner for the both of us (I usually give him his meat raw while I'm still cooking mine.) He's an awesome dog. I spent the time and money to train him to work totally off leash, so he's great outside.

Sadly I'll probably never see him again. I left him with my parents while I'm in Afghanistan (he loves them) just like I did when I was in basic training and OCS. But since I've been here in Afghanistan my wife\girlfriend of 5 years found her one true love, filed for divorce, stole several thousand dollars from our checking account, and used her key to my parents house to go by and steal the dog while they were at work. She took him back to Arizona to her little apartment.

FUUUUUUCK. What a bitch. Time to have some buddies do some recon while on leave for ya. Apartment for a terrier is torture...especially considering his former routine.

PS don't say anything else...OPSEC.

Yeah, he's used to living in my house (decently large) with a doggy door that goes to all of the great outdoors he can stand (big fields, woods, a stream to swim in.) And my parents house (big house) with a big back yard.

She gave her drivers license info and wrote the check at the pound when we got him, so I'm pretty sure he's legally hers (pre-marital property.) His microchip has her name as well. While I think I'd take better care of him, I don't think I have any legal claim to him.

Yeah I'm afraid so. Dogs are treated like a DVD player in eyes of law. Personal property dived up like all other personal property. Course a judge can do anything he wants if you're going to get that far. Sounds like asset wise she already got/spent everything so not much to fight about but the dog..it's up to you if it's worth pursuing.

Press charges for trespassing and entering your parents home?

This bitch not only cheated on you, but also stole money and your best friend. Definitely do whatever you can to get back at this low life.

I feed my german shepherds "Royal Canin: German Shepherd"

Apparently it's two stars, but I don't really care. Every other dry dog food I've tried gives them eczema and makes them scratch and bite at themselves until they lose their fur.

Royal Canin: GS is the first food I've found that stopped this, so i'll be sticking with it.

Jesus christ, it's a dog. You show me evidence that feeding them $50/bag food makes them live 50% longer and I'll buy it. Until then, who gives a flying fck? Like others have said, real food (especially meat) will trump any of this expensive crap made for suckers. There's nothing wrong with the cheap stuff + occasional table scraps.

Soooooo.........
The super expensive shit is much better than the super cheap shit.
Who could have figured that?

Not really super expensive. Wellness is a decent brand and the per day costs don't get crazy.

For cat's Kirkland's dry food is actually a very high quality food and only about $15 for 25lbs.

My indoor cat's are on a special diet, but I feed this to the ferals on my property at the tune of a bag a week.

Hmm there are a lot of dogs and cats that end up with health problems due to the filler content, esp. ash.

Cats are more susceptable though.
