No upgrade here. Although I noticed when I was logging in, on the left side they advertise 25GB when signing up for a new account. :\ I do use my hotmail account for certain things.

Do people use anything other than Dropbox, Skydrive or Box?

I am looking for something that I can use with the iPhone in particular.

No such option for me.

Those that are receiving the upgrades, are you actively using your mailbox? I have a Live ID, but I don't use it for anything, really.

Did you have a SkyDrive account established prior to this?

Live ID or not, it sounds like you had to specifically setup SkyDrive at some point prior to this upgrade (when 25GB of online storage had been promised). If you just established presence on SkyDrive, you might receive no option to upgrade.

I didn't specifically set one up prior to this, however when I logged into my Live account on this occasion, there it was all ready to go.

This makes sense to me, and too bad, so sad, but somehow my life will manage to go on. Right now I got a server in my office running AjaXplorer where I can upload whatever I want, whenever I want, and access it just about everywhere I want. I just didn't wanna miss out on some more free cloud storage if it was available. Oh well.

I talked to my friend last night, after midnight. He signed-in to Skydrive for the first time...asking repeatedly "what is Skydrive?" (even though I had already told him "it's Microsoft's version of Dropbox"). He had the 25GB upgrade message and claimed his own 25GB.

I don't remember signing up for SkyDrive specifically, but I had it, with something in storage. It sounds like something I'd sign up for, but I don't remember doing it. I think it got setup automagically some how, and I got the 25gb upgrade.

I believe mine was before Microsoft owned Hotmail...but I could be wrong. I think it was still in the 90s when I signed up. POP-ed my email a long time ago and lost it in a hard drive crash. Is there a way to find out when I signed up?

[edit]
Found it:

I guess it was after Microsoft bought HoTMaiL.

anyone else remember in '99 when someone forgot to pay the domain registration bill and either live.com or hotmail.com failed to work? Fuzzy on the details, but it was quite the story back then.

The Passport Payment

Background

On December 24, 1999, I tried to check my Hotmail email and found that there was a problem. Basically, passport.com addresses were, according to my browser, nonexistent, which made Hotmail unavailable (Hotmail uses passport.com for authentication). Thinking Microsoft was just experiencing some nameserver problems, I moved on without giving it much thought.

The next day, Christmas, I was reading the news on Slashdot and noticed a story about Hotmail being down. I read through the discussion area for that story and found that the problem had been tracked down to an outstanding invoice for passport.com at Network Solutions, the domain name registrar.

I own a number of domains myself, including doublewide.net, so I'm no stranger to the payment system at Network Solutions. I went to the payment page at https://payments.networksolutions.com and typed in "passport.com", after which I was greeted with a page showing the outstanding invoice for $35. One of the buttons near the bottom of the page was "Make payment", so I pressed it.

I was presented with a payment form, and I filled it out, including my credit card number. Then I did something else for a few minutes, leaving that completed form on my desktop. Finally, I brought it back to the foreground and contemplated the whole situation. I really couldn't think of any negative consequences, and I knew that I was probably restoring email service to a lot of Hotmail users (I thought there were a few million at the time, turns out there are more than 20 million users with around 55 million email addresses). And I knew that if I didn't press that button, for whatever reason, I'd regret it.

So I pressed it. When the receipt page came up, I posted it on Slashdot, along with the statement "Merry Christmas, Microsoft". This was around 11AM.

At 5:00PM that day, I received a call from a reporter at the San Jose Mercury News, but Hotmail still wasn't working, and I didn't think that passport.com addresses would be available until the next morning at 5:00AM. At midnight, I checked before going to bed and passport.com was unavailable. My son had us up at 6:00AM the next morning, so I looked and passport.com- and hotmail.com- was again available.

Although I was certain the payment was the fix, I couldn't know for certain until I'd heard from Microsoft or Network Solutions. On Tuesday, December 28 I heard from Microsoft. I was happy to hear that the payment did fix Passport, and of course they wanted to reimburse me, and thank me.

On January 15, 2000, I received the check from Microsoft for $500, in addition to a new copy of Visual Studio 6.0 (which I need to compile and run the decss program to decode my DVD's so that I can play them under Linux). I put the check up on ebay to raise money for charity.

Latest news is: as of January 27, 2000, at 11:37 CST, the auction is finished, and the check goes to John at Northern Development Group. He plans on giving the money to the Sisters of the Road Cafe, a Portland, Oregon charity which provides meals to poor and homeless people. Pretty cool!

I'd like to also add one more comment about this situation. The Slashdot story was posted originally at 9:07AM on Sunday morning, and by 10:58AM (1 hour 51 minutes) it was fixed. According to Microsoft, they had known about the problem the day before, and working with Network Solutions, their technicians were unable to determine the cause before we did. There's no better way to say it, folks, this is a better way to write and debug software.

I remember when that happened, too.

Microsoft also missed a payment in 2003:

Microsoft forgets to renew hotmail.co.uk domain
Kindly soul, El Reg to the rescue
By Tim Richardson

Posted in Music and Media, 6th November 2003 11:49 GMT

Exclusive Microsoft was busy covering up an almighty cock-up last night after forgetting to renew its hotmail.co.uk domain name.

Despite being warned that the domain for its popular Web mail service was up for renewal, it seems Microsoft - or whoever had the task of managing its hotmail.co.uk domain - overlooked this vital piece of administration.

As a result, last month Microsoft lost its claim to the domain and it was duly returned to the open market to be picked up by whomever fancied it

Luckily, the domain was snapped up on the same day - October 23. The new owner - a good hearted soul - then proceeded immediately to contact Microsoft, inform the giant of its slip and arrange to hand back the domain.

However, Microsoft didn't want to know. Despite phone calls and emails - and being fobbed off by Microsoft drones - our man behind this public-spirited deed was completely blanked by the software empire.

Microsoft only took notice when The Register contacted the company yesterday afternoon to enquire why its hotmail.co.uk site was registered to a private individual.

It was then we were told that the matter was under investigation and being "escalated". Worryingly, no one in the UK could deal with the matter so it was up to the US to sort things out.

Of course, while Microsoft's spinstresses tried to stall for time, the company was busy scurrying behind the scenes to sort out this embarrassing episode. It managed to contact hotmail.co.uk's new owner, grovel at their mistake and sort out the mess. By all accounts, hotmail.co.uk will be returned in a few days.

A spokeswoman for Nominet UK - the registry for all .uk domains - confirmed that hotmail.co.uk had failed to be renewed and was placed back into pool of available domains.

For Nominet's part, she confirmed that "all the standard renewal procedures were followed regarding hotmail.co.uk".

"I would like to remind companies and their agents that it is their responsibility to renew their domains," she said.

Despite repeated attempts to seek comment from Microsoft, the software giant has failed to cobble together any form of statement that might shed light on this situation.

In December 1999, Microsoft forgot to renew the domain name Passport.com, and so rendered its Hotmail service partially crippled. A Linux programmer, Michael Chaney, paid the $35 fee and promptly handed over ownership to Microsoft.

Does anyone know if you purchase extra storage, if you get to break the 2GB limit on files?
