Except passengers can actually help the drivers because they can see what the driver sees unlike a phone convo (which also takes a hand away from the driver if they're not using a headset), for instance a talking passenger can know when to shut up (or even call attention to) and let the driver concentrate say if someone cuts them off without signaling.

They've conducted studies on this, and it's the talking on the phone bit specifically (NOT the use of the arm/hand) that most hinders one's ability to drive; even with hands-free, individuals have significantly-poorer reaction times than when not on a phone, and/or when talking with someone else in the car.

Part of it is likely just the way our brain works, and part is because when someone else is in the car with you, they either shut up when they see something dangerous up ahead, and/or draw your attention to hazards that you might not notice.

Bullshit. Those who think they can just haven't had a situation where they needed to react immediately but were paying attention to their phone. It's only a matter of time.

Think of it this way, you are driving along and every 5 seconds you shut your eyes for 2 seconds at a time. You might get away with this for a while but eventually something is going to happen during that 2 seconds that you aren't going to be ready to respond to because you had your eyes closed...or you were fiddling with your fucking cell phone.

Agreed. There may be some who can get away with it more often than others based on being "better drivers," but it's a completely-unnecessary risk.

Look at it this way--regardless of whether or not you have any proof that talking on a cell phone makes you a significantly worse driver, it's GUARANTEED that it won't make you any better at it.

Does this mean truckers have to get rid of their cb radios as well?

You close your eyes for 2 seconds every 5 seconds while talking on the phone? Errr wah?

If this were about texting, I'd understand your analogy. But what kind of tard takes their eyes off the road. When they receive a call, they open the phone--DONE.

The ONLY situation I can see where talking on the phone helps a driver if the driver is sleep as hell and talking to someone helps him. Of course, he should just get off the road and nap...

Yeah, I've been witnessing more and more people obliviously of their surrounding b/c they're on their cellphones. They're an accident waiting to happen.

Good news in MA, texting while driving has been banned.

Took fucking long enough, now let's a) get phone conversations while driving banned and b) actually see this enforced.

I believe there should be a lot more billboards on the roadways for this. There are too many accidents cause my the drivers picking up their cell phones while driving.

Yeah I was almost run over by a chick who was busy talking on her cellphone yesterday. PEDESTRIAN RAGE!!

I could have sworn they passed a hands-free law here. I guess people just don't give a shit. Drives me nuts.

I can tell you right now I go brain-dead retarded with a passenger in the car. I've had one hands-free phone conversation in a car, but I was out in the country and going straight.

If I see a guy/gal with a phone in his hand behind me, I start braking really really early.

Can you dial a phone number without taking your eyes off the road? Because I can't. I see people all the time looking down to dial a phone number or whatever the hell else they are doing with their phone. Their eyes are definitely NOT on the road...might as well be closed.

It has been proven to be worse.

And Global Warming has been prove....

I am more distracted by talking to a passenger because I, like normal people tend to look at a person when we talk to them. Whoever proved this didn't do enough research. Was it Al Gore by chance?

Seriously? Who the hell looks at their passenger when they are driving? I never look at my passenger as we are driving, unless we are at a stop.

I talk on the cell phone while getting a blow job from a gorgeous woman while drinking coffee while reading the newspaper while surfing the internet while driving.

It's great.

i cook pancakes while driving

I wouldn't doubt that there are some people who would if they could only find a way to plug in the skillet...

So right after I post this I head out to a meeting and a chick on a cell phone completely blows a red light and almost takes me out. If I hadn't been paying close attention (my light had turned green but I waited my usual couple extra seconds and then saw her come around a curve way too fast. She almost hit me after I was already 50% into the turn), I would have gotten smoked.

Anyone who says they are the select few who can talk and drive are just ignorant. I sold cell phones for longer than most of you have been using them and I still hate the idea of talking and driving.

You are not that important.

In my dreams I talk on the cell phone while getting a blow job from a gorgeous woman while drinking coffee while reading the newspaper while surfing the internet while driving.

In real life I drive a 15 year old Ford Escort with no front bumper and I hold both hands on the wheel in a death grip of fear and I hate everyone else on the road.

My life sucks.

I salute your honesty sir.
