You need a minimum of 2,000 lumens/square foot.
What kinda lumens are you outputting, in how big of a space?
If I were to build a grow box, I would use a 400W MH for the bulk of it, then line the sides with high output LEDs.
In a 4x4 space, a single 400W MH or HPS gives you around 2250 lumens/square foot. The LEDs would just be icing.
I would be willing to bet that your yield sucked because you didn't have adequate ventilation for the 1000W HPS.
Assuming you have ultra high efficient LEDs that are drawing ~60W, you might have 6,000 lumens - 1/6th of a 400W MH/HPS.
Though, you're right.. heat is a major factor. Heat can be dealt with, though.. Lack of lumens is more difficult to deal with.
you also have to choose the correct spectrum, white led would be a waste of energy by default
