Cant really argue with it. LED with 5 year warranty? I mean, damn. I use LEDs in my grow box, wouldnt go with anything else around the house now. Lower electrical usage, life span smashes traditional filament bulbs...and for $20? For 5+ years? Steal.

LED in a grow box? What are you growing and how does it effect your bill?

429 lumens, 8.6W.

50 lumens/watt.

Fail.

Getting there, though! Let me know when they're up to over 100 lumens/watt, and at least they'll be better than compact fluorescents.

How does the light compare to traditional bulbs in terms of color? Is it a really harsh light like most CFLs?

Yep, the CF lights have gotten very aggressively priced and efficient.

The idea of LED's for everyday lighting is great. The technology/price just don't make it a good option...yet.

I picked up some 1.5w LED candelabra-base bulbs at Costco for the fixtures on my garage. They're not very bright...but they're more for looks than for actual light, but they do put off enough light to illuminate the cars in the driveway. Supposed to be 40w equivalent...but in reality, maybe more like 15-20w.

I was just about to post the same thing. Not quite enough light to be really useful, and this one uses more power than a CFL of the same brightness, and costs far more than a CFL. LEDs are really the way to go in the future (I build them into my instruments that I design). But, LED based home lightbulbs aren't quite ready yet.

My incandescent lights last me that long and cost how much? Sure, if I ran my lights lights 24/7 then power savings would be there, but I don't.

Green. And no, doesnt effect my bill at all...much better than the HPS bulb I was using (1000 watts!)...were talking MAYBE 60 watts total for the LEDs...and I yield a better crop with them anyways. Plus heat is a major factor in going to LED...that big ass bulb would make my room feel almost like a sauna...

lol

You need a minimum of 2,000 lumens/square foot.

What kinda lumens are you outputting, in how big of a space?

If I were to build a grow box, I would use a 400W MH for the bulk of it, then line the sides with high output LEDs.

In a 4x4 space, a single 400W MH or HPS gives you around 2250 lumens/square foot. The LEDs would just be icing.

I would be willing to bet that your yield sucked because you didn't have adequate ventilation for the 1000W HPS.

Assuming you have ultra high efficient LEDs that are drawing ~60W, you might have 6,000 lumens - 1/6th of a 400W MH/HPS.

Though, you're right.. heat is a major factor. Heat can be dealt with, though.. Lack of lumens is more difficult to deal with.

At least credit the source.

I think I'll be waiting till these suckers come down in price a bit.

Yah, I've been waiting and keeping an eye out for actual useable household LED replacement bulbs. Nothing out so far which sucks. Not sure why it is taking this long to get them to the market. It's not like the technology isn't there.

The tech is there, you're just not willing to pay for it yet.

If they could market these at even 3/4 of that, that would be amazing. Granted, they would be extremely expensive, but prices will only come down.

For reference, most light sources struggle to hit 100 lumens/watt.

There are MH and HPS bulbs that are into the 120 lumens/watt range, but they are the exception. We already have LEDs in the 100-150 lumens/watt range, though it seems most of the commercially available ones are in the 90-120 lumens/watt range.
