I've seen situations where one cop will use another cop+pulled over car as cover for using his speed gun, and yes, even on the other side of the highway.

Cops also tend to flock together... where one has it's lights on, others in the area will likely circle in.

While it would be dumb to slam on the breaks, the wise thing to do would be at least slow down if you are speeding excessively.

Some funny replies. In NC, people do actually seem to slam on their brakes -- but it seems to be to see only. In upstate NY, we didn't rubberneck like they do here, and didn't slam on brakes. Slowing down is fine, braking for a cop on the other side of a divided highway who is obviously busy and can't even see who you are is annoying and stupid. Don't drive like a maniac to begin with, and you'll be fine. Let off the gas for a few seconds to slow down if you must, fine. What bothers me more, is that these same people won't get out of the way for emergency vehicles needing to go by. I'll never understand NC drivers, ever.

People slow down when cops are nearby. It seems to make perfect sense to me. I'm not sure what you mean by slamming on the brakes (though I suspect you're using hyperbole), but slowing down is perfectly acceptable.

In the NW people actually DO slam on the brakes for cops whichever side of the road they're on, even if they're already going the speed limit. They don't come to a complete stop obviously, but when you see brake lights you apply your brakes as does everyone behind you. Pretty soon everyone on the freeway is doing 40 all because some guy had expired tags.

Anybody ever see the wild crashes videos on tv before? Where cars passing a cop somehow crash into the cop?

Just out of respect I slow down. Many cops have been killed because of this at the side of the road.

If you're going to be a respectless asshole don't complain when others are not.

It's a law in most states you are to pull over and slow down. It's for safety. I hope all you people who don't do this get a ticket the next time you pass a peace officer.

In Oregon, the law is to move one lane to the left (if possible) if a cop is pulled over on your side of the road. It says nothing about slamming on the brakes and slowing down to less than the speed limit.

Regardless, I think the general consensus is that people who slam on their brakes for cops stopped on the other side of a highway are dangerous idiots.

yes, i was. that was the main point though possibly worded poorly.
it should say someone pulled over on the opposite of a divided highway.

NC law regarding an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. It does not apply to emergency vehicles on the other side of a divided highway. That's what subsection a is about.

Basically, if the emergency vehicle is on your side of the road, you must either move over a lane, or if you can't move over a lane, you must slow down significantly as you pass the emergency vehicle. Significantly because the law says you must be prepared to stop. But not so much as to be a danger to traffic...

NC GS 20-157(f)

(f) When an authorized emergency vehicle as described in subsection (a) of this section or any public service vehicle is parked or standing within 12 feet of a roadway and is giving a warning signal by appropriate light, the driver of every other approaching vehicle shall, as soon as it is safe and when not otherwise directed by an individual lawfully directing traffic, do one of the following:

(1) Move the vehicle into a lane that is not the lane nearest the parked or standing authorized emergency vehicle or public service vehicle and continue traveling in that lane until safely clear of the authorized emergency vehicle. This paragraph applies only if the roadway has at least two lanes for traffic proceeding in the direction of the approaching vehicle and if the approaching vehicle may change lanes safely and without interfering with any vehicular traffic.

(2) Slow the vehicle, maintaining a safe speed for traffic conditions, and operate the vehicle at a reduced speed and be prepared to stop until completely past the authorized emergency vehicle or public service vehicle. This paragraph applies only if the roadway has only one lane for traffic proceeding in the direction of the approaching vehicle or if the approaching vehicle may not change lanes safely and without interfering with any vehicular traffic.

Just to re-clarify, the OP was initially talking about both sides of the highway. He mentions a cop already having soemone stopped, and then adds the "or if he's on the other side"...

PSA: if a cop has already pulled someone over or if hes on the other side

PSA:
If you dont break the law you never have to worry about getting punished.

And if you're paranoid, keep a camcorder in the vehicle at all times. By default have it set to point at the speedometer. I saw a 200 dollar HD camcorder at Walmart the other day. I'm sure it sucks for most uses, but its excellent insurance against police abuse.

I hate it when people slow down to 10+ below the speed limit when they see a cop. Dude guys, just drive the speed limit, you just look like a bunch of guilty retards doing that.

I routinely go by a cop at 2-3 over the posted limit. There is that 5mph grace zone.

The grace may not exist. It is up to the local policies.

Parents live in a town where 25 is the posted. 27 is a ticket

Check your state laws. Most say you should slow to 10 mph below the speed limit.

Safety first.

Slow to 10mph because a cop is sitting in the median clocking people? Or is on the other side of the highway? Nope.

Here in Ohio, the only time you need to slow down is if the cop is by the side of the road (pulled someone over, assisting someone, whatever) and you can't move over a lane. Then, the law just says to slow down. That's all.

My rant was about the guys who speed just to slam on the brakes to well below the speed limit when they come up to a cop clocking traffic.

I know the laws here, I obey them carefully Which is why I have a squeaky-clean driving record

Do you guys have especially agressive cops? I know where I was from, the DC metro area, we would slow down from 78-85 to 60-65(the speed limit is 65) but I have never seen anyone go below 60 since that's enough to beat the margin of error.

False, I was pulled over for speeding once by a motorcycle cop, doing 70 in a 55. The cop just got to my window as another driver whizzed by doing at least 100mph, flying by other cars as if they were at a stand still.

The cop said, "You're off the hook," and took off after the car on his bike.
