PSA: Laptop style keyboards are the ****

I got fed up with my old keyboard, so I decided to get one with a more satisfying feel to the keys.

I got this one from bestbuy that has "short" keys, like the ones on a laptop, and the tactile feel when depressing the keys, the springiness, is about the same as a laptop too. Feels like I can type faster, but I haven't measured.

It also looks pretty nice, is wireless (bluetooth), grips my desk much better, and feels more sturdy.

No cursing in titles.

I hate "short-depth" laptop-style keys. I type much faster on even a Dell QuietKey (which, actually, I prefer to this Eclipse II I'm now typing on).

I type faster on keyboards with stiffer keys.

EDIT: "Stiff" meaning having a high spring constant, rather than a high coefficient of friction.

doesnt make a difference really - i think its just your natural finger speed/reactions. i type 130 wpm on typera.tk with laptop ( thinkpad ) and desktop ( Logitech )... always a bit slower than Descartes on these typing challenges.

The other keyboard that had a decent feel to it was a Logitech s510 (520 model is similar but the keys feel different). That one had a metallic feel and sound to it when the keys were pressed, which I like better than any other keyboard i've tried, but the keys were a little stiffer and taller than the one I got.

The placement of the Alt key and the extra buttons between the arrow keys and the del, end, and pg dwn keys is annoying so far. I might end up returning this if I don't get used to this.

I wonder if there's a way to reverse the functions of the alt and windows keys? That would kill the more annoying of the two problems.

You can easily remap the keys in Linux.

Well i found an app called SharpKeys that let me remap "Left Alt" and "Left Windows Key". It screwed up my windows profile, windows couldn't find my profile, even though it was on the HD. It created a new profile under a new folder, "\documents and settings\TEMP\".

It was stupid to be using Administrator for daily use anyways, so i created a new user, and then copied all the stuff from my old profile folder into that one, seems to be working okay so far.

not sure they make a wireless one, but I have the usb ultranav which has the trackpoint and the touchpad.

full keys suck but so do IMO laptop keyboards, there are KBs that make something that is inbetween and it IMO is the best

Nah get this one.

I have used a lot of keyboards over the past few years (basically was doing a yearly upgrade on mouse/keyboard for 3 years at home, and trying out 10 more each year before I settled on one), and that is by far keyboard I like most out of all I've ever used.
