I think Vivi and Virge both make solid arguments:

88 buyin's = 880+? tickets without megaplier. odds are crap anyway, so might as well just get more tickets

or

Odds are about as crappy with 440 tickets as they are with 880. we are far more likely to win smaller prizes, with the only real hope of hitting the 1million for anything meaningful...at which poin megaplier makes tons more sense.


recall that the pool from Miami with the 3000+ tickets for the 1 billion Powerball didn't hit anything.

The Megaplyer only makes sense if the additional money causes a discontinuous use-change

For example, in my situation the value of anything around 7million is "change your life" money, and 70million is "start that empire you always dreamed of" but 700k is "invest and pay debts" money.

I wouldn't regret getting 1m instead of 2m; that amount stays in the 'invest and pay debts' range.

1m to 2m no big deal. 3m to 6m, big deal. 7m to 14m no big deal, 35m to 70m big deal.

Besides, megaplyers won't matter much after we win the main jackpot.
