usually the state lottery bureaucracy sells both jackpot type games and scratch off tickets.

the problem with doing that is a) huge jackpots have an increasing likelihood of multiple winners; b) you have to pay federal and state income taxes on the winnings; c) the number quoted is the total payout of a 20 year annuity payment, if you take all the money up front you get ~70% of that.

Then pay taxes on the ~70%

Let's say I'm the sole winner (which is unlikely, since I don't have a ticket.)

What if picked up my stuff and moved to a state (without state income taxes) *before* claiming the prize? Would I still have to pay NY tax?

I believe (not 100% positive) that you're taxed in the state you bought it in.

your ticket can only be redeemed in the state you bought it.

a way around this is if you goto a state w/o state taxes and buy your tix there.

if u win, then legally move, then claim your tix.

obviously try your best to not let your old state know u won $200M. thats enuf tax $ that they'll spend the effort to go after you. and you have to waste time/energy defending in court.

ie: get drivers license in new state. dont use old states drivers license when redeeming tix

I am pretty sure that you have to claim the winning ticket at the state lottery office of the state that sold it.

Would that be nice if you just pick and move to a state with no income state and then a few months later, claim the ticket at the new state. No state income tax on hundreds of million = x 1000000 (wishful thinking).

You'd have to be uber-lucky with the quick pick, or have something personal/interesting with the numbers to select those /sigh.
