Logitech Z-2300 here. The high end on the satellites were sort of weak, so I added 2 Alpine dome tweeters to the bastards. Sounds freaking crisp now.

Yes, the obnoxious bass on most 2.1. PC speakers make me feel like a riced out Honda Civic ghetto blaster... I

I might get the Swan m10s to try to disprove my own theory, because they look so purty! 2.0s get most things right, but I do miss the occasional thump, and an amp/receiver+speakers cost about the same as decent studio monitors
Yeah, that's the thing about active loudspeakers like the M200 and A5. If you're going to invest that much in an audio system, you might as well just buy an amp and speakers separately IMO.

And 2.1 is nice for games and movies, I just don't really like all the bass for music, and that's what I'm usually using my PC speakers for.

I've had my Klipsch Promedia 5.1s for a while now, and I can't bring myself to replace them as they're pretty old now (no headphone jack) etc. But man, they sound so good. They might be on the way out now as I get a low frequency hum

I have the original Logitech Z's.. the 1000 watt THX ones. I switched out all the original speaker and just use the bass, amp, and control piece. I still have all 5 of the other speakers, but this original setup had a strange hissing sound sometimes that would appear. So I some better bookshelf speakers and now it's all beuno with some upgraded speaker wire.

You can try the same thing with the Logitech Z 5500 and just change out the bookshelf speakers and wires for something a bit better.

Google for Sub Woofer Amps or checkout the Klipsch website. A replacement is approx $100.

issue is you have no control over the cross over point, so you cant use the thing as a regular amp with bookshelfs

I hate people who think they know what good audio is. You know why? Because you don't. All you know is what you've read on the internet. The rest is your own delusions. You hear distortion where there is none. You hear 'fatiguing' highs when they sound fine. You know what you're really hearing? It's the sound of your own foolishness, and it's telling you to spend money on speakers you don't need. And you listen. Everyone knows this.

That's exactly what I have too.. I moved them to my bedroom because the highs were so cruddy and the mids absent. Does your mod help with the mids? I might just have to try that

Actually, every 2.1 that I've been disappointed with was purchased due to overwhelmingly positive internet forum buzz - I've disagreed with almost everything I've read, until I went old school (receiver/amp+speakers). So, yeah.. Shut up?

I've had my promedia 4.1s for 9 years now. I had to replace the control module on them, but that was $50 and it added a headphone and mic jack so it was more than worth it. Its the only piece of equipment I still have from my first PC I built.

The highs don't really bug me on most 2.1 PC speakers, what I can't stand is that the bass tends to be overpowering and muddy. You can tell they design them for 14 year olds who want lots of boom boom boom for their music and video games. So I usually just stick with 2.0 setups, and there are some pretty good ones out there. The Swan M200 and Audioengine A5, for example. Both are kind of expensive, though.

Exactly. Computer speakers try to mask their crappy sound with heavy bass. It really annoys me when I'm listening to a podcast and the floor vibrates from the talking. For gaming I typically use my headphone amp and my Sennheiser HD 580s.

Yeahhh... I'm gonna have to agree 100%.

Says the guy who brought in a receiver and bookshelf speakers to work... lol

You're not the only one

If you count a t-amp as a "receiver" I guess

My work system is a Gen-1 Sonic Impact T-amp (gift from Kaido) powering a pair of AV123 X-LS Classics in White Shadow Maple.

At home, I how have my computer in a different room than my Home Theater, so I had to get something else. On the bright side for me, my sister is currently spending a year in England, so she didn't want to bring her Swan M200s there, so I've been using them.

I'm happy with the value I've gotten from both systems.

You can get it even though its discontinued?

Did Klipsch make a model for the Promedia's with a control module with headphone and mic jack? I have GMXs where the control pod never had headphone or mic jacks so I really want them, but for now I've been using the computer's front audio panel, which isn't bad but its really noisy.

Hows the bass on those M200s? Do they have a subwoofer out in case you'd like to upgrade?

Yep. Listening to some Van Morrison on a vintage Nikko receiver with some Boston Acoustics bookshelf speakers. Sounds great. Imagine if the OP actually used a good amp...which really says a lot about how bad the Klipsch amp must be.

Best computer speakers I've heard are (no surprise) a set of Boston Acoustics something or other. Very pleasant but still not well suited for music.

I'm not sure, I got it 3+ years ago. I spilled water on mine and called up Klipsch. They had a replacement part for the module and it happened to have a headphone and mic jack on the right side. I was very pleased to see it. Might give them a call and see if they still have any, but don't be surprised if they no longer make them.

Edit: I found the part I got:
