NVIDIA reaches settlement in class action suit affecting Apple, Dell, HP laptops
By Donald Melanson posted Sep 30th 2010 12:55PM

Some folks may have long forgotten about the issue by now, but anyone that was hit by those defective NVIDIA GPUs a couple of years back will likely want to take notice -- the company has finally reached a settlement in the class action lawsuit spurred on by the issue, and anyone with an affected Apple, Dell or HP laptop is eligible for some form of compensation. In the case of Apple and Dell laptops, that includes a replacement of the GPU or MCP, while users of an affected HP laptop will actually get a full replacement laptop "similar in kind and value." Anyone that has already paid to have their laptop repaired due to the GPU issue is also entitled to a full reimbursement provided they have the necessary documentation for the repairs. Even if you are covered, however, you'll still have to wait a bit longer to actually get any compensation -- a final hearing is scheduled for December 20th, and claims will only begin sometime after that. In the meantime, be sure to hit up the source link below for the complete details, including a list of all the models affected.

The list:

Belongs in VC&Graphics.

No, really it doesn't.

I didn't know about the lawsuit, or settlement, and have one of the affected models. In fact, I've been experiencing one of the symptoms recently and would have had no idea.

Thanks for the post!

Huh, the GPU issues are exactly why I never pulled the trigger on the Dell XPS M1330.

I have a friend with a HP laptop that I think qualifies. He's had nothing but problems with the thing. I'll send him a link. Thanks for posting.

wow I am pretty pissed, I had two of the hp laptops with the issue and after I tried getting them repaired without success I scraped them just weeks ago.

Heres to hoping I can call HP up and ask for the proper information to still get something from these if not I am out of luck.

Heck yes! I have an HP notebook that is affected by this! Can't wait to see what HP gives me for a replacement!

Strange, a friend of mine has an HP DV9700 with an nvidia video card in it. However, it's not part of the settlement. He wants to sue them in small claims court. Do you'll think he has a case?

I have a Dell XPS M1530 shipped 04/04/2008. I don't have any paperwork for it though.

Looks like unless you actually spent money on a repair, the best you can do is getting the chip replaced. Not sure it's worth the hassle on 5 year old machines...

I have a Dell D630 with the NVIDIA Quadro NVS but it runs fine, I've updated to the Dell BIOS that is supposed to help keep the GPU temp down (probably by running it at reduced operating frequency).

My wife's 1330 has been fine save for a failed power jack a few months ago. Got a new mobo as it is under warranty.

My D830 has been acting up....time to look into this. At first I thought it was some result of the ram/SSD/Windows7 upgrade but a vid card issue makes a lot of sense too.

My Dell M1530 is under this thing... I wonder what will happen. While my GPU hasn't died, I did used to get quite a few system beeps while playing games on my laptop, but I could never find anything about what the beeps mean.

EDIT:

For anyone going through the steps for a Dell machine and having to look at the long list of parts to find theirs, I found mine listed as...

"XR148 ASSY,BASE,DISCRT,256M,M1530"

It may not be the exact same for you, but the words "DISCRT" and a "256M" gave it away to me since the M8600GT in my laptop is a discrete card with 256mb of RAM.
