About 80% of the Mac users I know can't give any purposeful reasons as to why they wanted to use a Mac instead of a PC.

"Oh it doesn't crash" "no viruses". Haven't had a problem with my PC for 4+ years since I got it and I'm able to upgrade the components. I win?

Main one is Battery Life.

For me why I use a MacBook Pro is:

1) Form factor. I had to choose between that, a T61 or a Dell XPS 15 back then. They were over 6 lbs back then. The MBP was 5.5 lbs.

2) Battery life. Apple optimizes battery life well. This is because OS X uses aggressive Intel Speedstep settings. The T61 and Dell XPS topped out around 3hrs of battery back then. The MBP does 5 on a mere 65 WHr battery.

3) I have a power desktop PC where I do my photo editing, video editing, gaming, etc. All I need with my MBP is to edit word documents, a little Adobe Lightroom on the go, and browsing/chatting. As much as Office 2004 and 2008 sucked, 2011 is decent.

I used to do all my work at home on my PC because MS Office is so much better. This changed for my last semester's project. I did everything on my Mac since Office 2011 has MUCH improved. I still prefer 2010 over the Mac stuff though.

Downsides:
- Cost/value: Terribly expensive $2000 machine. 1 month later I saw a slickdeal for a comparable Dell XPS machine for $1100 or $1300. I forget, but whatever. This was a graduation gift.

As much as I told myself I needed Windows and I dualbooted Windows for the longest time, after my HD broke and I got it replaced last October, I've been Windows free on my MBP. I see my next likely laptop as the next MacBook Pro in 2012. With that said I just ordered a new i3 NAS which will probably run Solaris Express or FreeBSD.

BTW that virus thing... as much as I am a pro user on PC and I don't have troubles, Microsoft Security Essentials has failed me twice. I've gotten a rootkit infection before that NOD32 failed to remove. Those things are biatches to get rid of. I have no idea how this got through. There honestly is less of that to worry about on a Mac. Just once in a while you get screwed. Remember when Anandtech had some attack ads before? Yeah. Got my work computer TWICE. We had Symantec corporate and it was 6pm on a Friday. I didn't want to look like an idiot who was surfing the web and have to call the IT guy, so I spent another hour in the office cleaning it out (most of it was just waiting for Malware Bytes to scan).

I've grown to like chrome explicitly because I don't feel like managing addons and it displays damn near everything without tweaking. It displays adverts too but I don't really care, they aren't as bad with the popups like they used to be.

So if I want to see the webpage like it was meant to be displayed I use chrome.

Pretty operating system. No really though, thats about it. Just a nice feel to it, thats what Apple strives for, easy usability.

People dont include opera because opera still sucks at using proxies. Opera rocks my dick off at home but on my work computer it refuses to use the system proxy, it asks for passwords all the time, and even then it forgets to load half the page.

Right now my work puter uses firefox just because it knows how to use the proxy without shitting in its pants.

The browser wars don't matter as much anymore. I'm fine with Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari and Opera. I default to Firefox, though, simply because I happen to be used to having the portable version plus personas with a dark theme on all my systems (including at work).

I don't see any point in arguing for one or the other, though I'm glad competition is still driving new developments and features. I use what works for me, I don't care if you happen to use something else. Tech pragmatism: use what works best for you.

I usually do most of my testing with no security software at all. Haven't had a virus since 1996 (It was crude. I downloaded that myself and managed to remove it thoroughly without removal software).

Actually, my browser was exploited once by a zero-day vulnerability before I fully switched away from IE. It was OBVIOUS and foiled by a simple system restore. Of course, I did a full format / reinstall anyway.

Do you just run a bunch of supposed software cracks and download executables from disreputable sources?

Safari's the best browser, Cover Flow for browsing history FTW.

SAFARI is the worst browser I have ever come across. It's slow, freezes up all the time, has horrible plugin support, heavier than chrome/ie/firefox, etc... even Mac users hate it... how can anyone say it's good?

if Android's native browser supported bookmark sync I would still use Chrome. But for some reason they refuse to allow apps to have access to bookmarks. So I use Firefox mobile and Firefox 4. It automatically sync's my bookmarks and I can even access my open tabs from my desktop on my phone.

I love firefox sync. However, I will say the android firefox browser is a bit bloated and I wish they could shrink it down a bit.

I'm not really sure what you're getting at. Vanilla browser comparison is valid. First boot experience is worth something(regarding button placement/stock features), but in Firefox's case that's eliminating it's strong suit(addons). Opera has the most rendering issues, and IE9 is still new, but it sounds pretty good from what I've read.

I switch between firefox and IE. Firefox is nice with the plugins. I only use IE for pages that firefox doesnt work with. IE is suppose to be the most secure browser but everytime I see an infected PC, they were running IE.
