so i played the crap out of this yesterday, and its fun. its the same gameplay as the first, but updated to be more of a mobile type of gameplay with level progression and going back to beaten levels to do different goals to earn stars. getting these stars let you unlock and progress to the later levels. you also have keys you gather by playing the levels to unlock branches to the main path that let you earn new plants and bonuses. as you progress down the main story line you unlock more plants.

you dont have to pay real money for anything. paying will let you progress faster/more easily.

bottom line, its fun.

Played a few levels. Those gravestones makes the early game dicey. The powers are just a gold sink, not sure if there is something else to do with gold though. Trouble with these games with powerups is either it makes the game easy or too hard without them.

the main story line has been pretty easy. some of the challenges for stars have been pretty tricky.

gravestones arent a problem with cabbagepults.

The challenges are obviously made to make you spend coins. Limiting the zombies from reaching the flowers and not building anything for 60sec can be done easily with just the powers. I had the zombies try to attack me at the house and when I defended, I got to break three pinatas. The prize from one was 10K coins but I still stringent about spending my powers, seems like cheating.

I'm stuck on I think the 3rd star for the 2nd one. I have to produce like 2,500 in sun with a maximum of 12 plants (I think?) I made as many sun flowers as I could with still having plants to kill the zombies and I'm not getting anywhere close to the sun goal. I played it 10 times and every time I'm getting at most about half.

Do you have the double sunflower plant? That's CORE in the entire game.

General strat for most PvZ 1 & 2:

1. Load up low/no sun plants (potatoe mine for 25, ice-berg for 0, blocking nut for 50)

2. Load up on sunflower and double sunflower when available.

3. Get 2 key DPS plants (like Dragon & double/pea pod shooters)

4. The game is all about initial investment paying HUGE dividend later on. You should be planting sunflower FIRST THING & EVERY CD, EVERY TIME. See #2? You use LEAST amount of sun to achieve this.

5. Whenever you get seed, use it on sunflower immediately for massive sun.

With these accomplished, you will be cruising through 90% of levels. Any other way, your sun is gimped and end up having not enough. Most levels, I finish the game with all board filled up except the very first row (where zombies spawn)

It plays like Starcarft. You must never stop SCV production.

Oh, if you shovel an existing plant, it doesn't count towards the limit. You can re-plant a better one. This little fact hugely makes that level easier.

I don't have the double sun flower, the door's locked so I'm trying to get enough stars to unlock it so I can get the double sun flower. I'll poke around and see what other levels I can do.

I did it on my first try. I had two columns of sunflowers, 10. On the last wave attack, I removed any peashooters, that could kill the last zombie. I froze the last zombie, after it destroyed the walnut, I dropped another in it's place. Once I hit 2500, then killed it.

I'm a little disappointed. It's fun enough for a free game, but it's not holding my interest the same way as the original PvZ. This coming from a guy with 164 hours playing of PvZ on steam (admittedly a lot of that was just the Zen garden playing itself). I think it's the pacing and pay-off. In PvZ 1, every single level gave you a new plant or *something*. It seems like a lot of the levels in 2 just give you nothing, and you only see a new plant once every 4-5 levels. The levels also seem to be so similar, and all of them are way too easy so far.

Replaying levels for stars just feels tedious. Some were slightly challenging, but nothing I'd really call hard so far. It's just kinda boring and tedious.

I'll keep playing, it's not completely unfun, and I'm hoping some new plant unlocks eventually will mix things up, but so far it hasn't held up to my expectations at all.

i agree with the tedious aspect of replaying levels for stars. Im almost to the burnt out stage just from grinding out star levels to get a 4th key so i could unlock the double sunflower. The tactics from level to level dont really change...

Just doesn't compare to the original. I completely agree with Chiropteran and all points made. My 7 y.o. son enjoys playing it, but I will stick with the original for now - working to get a 999' tall Tree of Wisdom just because.

I've played and beaten the game at least 6 times over now, when I want to challenge myself I go back to the 'Endless' survival and try out different strategies. It's amazing to see guys claiming to be over 1,000 flags on that level.

Way too easy compared to the first one. I only used a special power once so far to complete the "spend no sun for 90 seconds" challenge, seems impossible without a power.

Plant 1 sun immediately.

That's same as not planting one at start.

Collect sun and you have a much better start.

I have 28,000 coins that I earned naturally. I only used it twice. I feel like it's cheating although they weren't bought.

The devs said that all levels were designed to be beaten without using any coins. So I try to stick by that.

On another note, so far the Dragon plants seem wayy to strong and cost efficient for 150 sun. It covers 3 rows and provides UNLIMITED dmg to everyone in the path. That's literally 10x better than 3-way shot pea or boomerang or double plant.

Cannot spend any sun for 90 seconds, can only plant free plants in that time. By the time the 90s is up the first zombie is almost to the lawnmowers, so you need to kill it almost immediately once you can spend suns.. maybe need to unlock a better plant to be able to do it without powers, a squash might work.

Plant fooded cabbage throwers seem way OP. Hits ALL zombies. for huge damage.

Again, whenever you spend sun, the timer resets, yes? (you don't disqualify)

1. Spending sun asap at start of game = same 90 seconds

2. Not spending sun for 90 seconds = no difference.

As you can see, #1 nets you massive more gold in comparison. When 90 secs is over, you have Iceberg, potato mine, and walnut ready.

Plant iceberg = freezes zombie, then plant the mine on top. By the time he's unfrozen, the mine is ready..

You just only spent 25 sun overcoming the biggest hurdle of the game. The rest should be a breeze.

It doesn't currently work with a Samsung Galaxy S3 OR a Galaxy Nexus 7?? Those are two of the most popular Android devices around.

EA's release manager must be smoking crack if they think that is acceptable. That would be like releasing a product on iOS does doesn't work with the iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini.

Edit: OK, I see. It's not out in the US yet. Why don't they just say that, instead of putting up this incompatibility BS?

you see those two letters "EA" no other reason needed.. maybe you need ORIGIN to replace the play store? (yes that is a joke, damn I hope EA dont see and do that!!)

Yes, keeping the last zombie alive in this manner, using walnuts to hold him up, works great for delaying the end of the game to collect the required amount of sun.

The other thing you can do is drop some plant food on your Sunflower plants. That pumps them up for a few seconds and they spit out a bunch of extra sun.

I really liked the first game and when I heard they were going with the free to play, with in-app purchase model I thought the game was going to really suck. However, I have to say I think they found a pretty good balance.

Is it collect or spend? The counter only runs when you plant something not when you collect the sun.

I was speaking when the goal is to collect a certain amount of sun.

There are also some levels where to get the gold star you can't spend more than a certain amount of sun, usually with other conditions as well, but I wasn't referring to that.

Yea, I played one this morning that was 2500 collect and not more than 15 plants. But when I collected suns, the counter didn't move, only when I planted plants.
