Agree.

You can if you happen to live in one of the six states where lottery winners can remain anonymous: Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and South Carolina.

I think GA was trying to pass some stupid crap that would let you stay anonymous for a 25% cut.

LOL - a state sponsored protection racket

Good for her, but why did she not wait a least a week/month and set up a LLC or something to maintain a low profile/a level of anonymity? Now she will be a target of kooks, fake charities, family members she never heard of, etc.
I wonder what her former job was that she had to quit the very next day.

seriously dumb lady this one. AT lotto pool would have much smarterer.

The states (44 of them) and DC and PR and Virgin Islands form a group known as The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). It is a non-profit, government-benefit association owned and operated by its member lotteries. Each MUSL member offers one or more of the games administered by MUSL. All profits are retained by the individual lotteries.

All members in the MUSL pool the money together after all of the entities take their cuts (retailers, members of the MUSL, administration and marketing costs, other costs) to pay out the jackpot regardless of the location of the winning ticket(s).

So why would one particular state not be paying out winnings if it isn't coming out of their pockets? Do they get to just take the money for themselves?

What are you talking about? Which state? Are you talking about IL?

Another poster posted this link that winner(s) (larger than $25K) in IL will have to wait to get the money because of budget problem - http://money.cnn.com/2017/06/27/news/illinois-lottery-state-budget/index.html

That's pretty awesome.

First, the elation that she won will be with her for some time. She will be able to buy what she wants, and do the things that she only dreamed about.

Then, the vultures. I had read that hew coworker followed her home to make sure that she was OK, when she found out that she won. Her Coworker told her that she won. Well ain't that sweet. Money changes people. I bet her coworker is like "I followed you home! Now where is my million dollars! You can't give me a million? You have $750 millions! What's one million? I thought you were my friend! I'll never talk to you again!!!"

And, then the relatives will be coming out of the woodwork. "Remember me? I'm uncle John John. Umm.. Can I have $5m? Can you buy me a house? What do you mean you can't buy me a $500k house!!" Oh, and her kids. "Mom, I want a beamer! Naw.. A Mercedes!" I want it NOW!!"

With a lot of money comes responsibility. It's why many lotto winners start distrusting people. Everyone wants a piece.

Yes, that's what I was questioning. I read the entire article but the opening says it all:

"State lottery officials announced Tuesday that if Illinois doesn't reach a deal to fund the government by the start of the fiscal year on July 1, it won't be able to make payments on time to those who win more than $25,000."

haha, I wish...the parties we'd have.
They started to threaten locking down my business paypal, even when we used venmo...also owned by paypal. Oy that was a close one.
I know. Thanks for the times though. What I'd have done with $400M after tax......

Because 99.999% of the people that play lotteries are too fucking stupid to think of such things? A fool and their money are soon parted?

Seriously though, with that level of money and the amount of publicity I wouldn't be surprised if she gets some fun ransoms or something.

$443.3
-$110.825 (25% Fed Tax)
-$ 022.165 (5% State Tax)
---------------------------------
$310.31. (tax on any interest made annually?)

Uhhhh, since when is the lottery taxed at 25% Fed? The lottery doesn't have a special tax rate, thus it will be taxed at the maximum income tax bracket of 39.6%

25% is in reference to how much is taken at the time of withdrawl, you will still owe the other 14.6% at tax time. Enjoy that hefty bill.

Okay that was based on the article I linked.

Here's a much better analysis.

5% State Tax - $24,025,000

Man, can you imagine winning a net $300 million? Hell, can you imagine winning $100 million? Invest it in the stock market. Assuming a very conservative 5% return, you're generating $5 million per year. Get one of those fancy 1% savings accounts (are there limits on these?) and you're making a guaranteed $1 million per year doing absolutely nothing.
