Yes, that's what I was questioning. I read the entire article but the opening says it all:

"State lottery officials announced Tuesday that if Illinois doesn't reach a deal to fund the government by the start of the fiscal year on July 1, it won't be able to make payments on time to those who win more than $25,000."

The IL legislature overrode the governor's veto and passed a budget, lottery payouts have resumed AFAIK.

If you are a foreign national, wouldn't you pay your local income tax rate and not pay any US taxes? If you aren't a US resident I can't see how you would be liable. The Powerball website seems to think that's the case too.

Nice problem to have!

that's interesting because the US i think is the only country where you have to pay taxes to your homeland even when working abroad. that's why british bands etc used to do a "tax year" in ROI or somewhere. after 6 months or a year you didn't have to pay tax in britain on money not earned in britain. or some such anyway

Unless it was changed, you don't pay on anything under $92k. And, with state tax it depends on the state you lived in before you went abroad.

When I taught in South Korea the only taxes I paid were my state tax. NJ and California are the only two states that you have to pay taxes too.

I don't get why people would buy from the same machine hoping to hit the jackpot again. That's like lightning hitting you twice.

people be dumb, yo.

stores always hype the winners that have bought tickets at their machines, hanging up winnings and dates and all that. People seem to believe that particular stores are "lucky" because they sell so many winning tickets. What happens, of course, is that stupid people buy into this and the specific store receives vastly more traffic than other nearby lotto retailers, so more traffic is, in aggregate, going to net a decent amount more winners than other stores.

Such stores understand this, of course, and they exploit it for good reason.

Over 500? That's my threshold. Time to go buy.
my threshold is when the jackpot crosses the point where buying all the numbers becomes a potentially money making endeavor (forgetting taxes and non-jackpot winnings). not quite there on either powerball or mega right now, but close on both. powerball will probably cross that by saturday's draw time ($585 million). mega has a ways to go, but it'll be there if no winner is drawn tonight ($605 million).

At least 2 of the match-5 January 5, 2018 Mega Millions winners can console themselves with a measly $3 million . . article.

Both the Power Ball and Mega Millions had winners so the jackpots are back to normal.

Sure would be fun to do another AT LOTTO
It would probably be a good idea to figure out what pay method to use now before the lotto gets big so we will be ready to go. Anybody got any ideas on who to use? Venmo is out, Paypal is out and Amazon is out.
