I'm coming around to the position that the best thing is to vote to impeach but withhold it from the Senate unless or until McConnell agrees to reasonable terms for the trial. If he never does, then it never goes to the Senate and Trump will be impeached but not get the acquittal he wants.

That's silly. McConnell wants to not deal with it. Don't give him any excuses.

I know that most/all of the banana Republican talking points trying to defend Trump against impeachment are complete bullshit. They are trying to defend the indefensible, but this one really has me scratching my head.

Rep. Tom Cole, R-Oka said in his closing arguments that impeachment is a "flawed process" that has gone on "at the expense of minority rights."

Huh!? Minority rights? How the hell did he come up with that one?
He's speaking to rights of the minority party in the House. He's still full of crap as the House minority has been afforded eveything they asked for except the "right" to quash this impeachment.

I wish that these congresscritters on both sides would stop showboating and just let the vote happen. We all know that this impeachment vote in the house is going down on straight party lines, and nobody is going to commit political suicide by going against it.

McCarthy just complained about “political politics”. When the GOP sends us people they aren’t sending their best.

So why should Democrats drop it off to Moscow Mitch who will just let it die with an acquittal in one week? I'm not sure how the Republican argument of having the right to a sham trial will resonate with voters.

I doubt it will resonate well with most voters at all. It's an admission of guilt & complicity. McConnell & the GOP will get to wear the shame & outrage into the election. Duty & Love of Country will be served, by the Dems, even if Justice is not.

That's silly. McConnell wants it to be over and he the one who puts the stake in the heart of impeachment and he and his mates will have praises sung.

Why do you want to help them? The Dems retain control, can have additional testimony, and court cases resolved. They retain the upper hand or take a beating just like a martyr.

Don't complain when you want to give away the only way of not losing. Trump goes down in history as the only President not acquited and rightly so.

Defending the president would be admitting there is substance to allegations. It's a much more effective strategy for GOP to summarily deny any appearance of impropriety.

Effective? I don’t know about that as I doubt they changed anyone’s mind or convinced any undecided person to adopt their position.
It is however the only real option they have because they can’t defend the actions of the president.

This coming election will be about getting out the vote and it’s up to the democrats to lose.

Even though impeachment is a political process, I’d rather the democrats not play politics when they don’t have to.

I meant to say it's the best and therefore the most effective tactic they have. We will see in November which way the winds will blow.

P.S. I find it absolutely disturbing the mingling and smiling as the vote gets tallied up. Jim Jordan is positively giddy and has the biggest grin on his face imaginable.

Basically chiseling it on his tombstone in front of him though.

Which, if I was a vindictive person, I’d be absolutely giddy about. However I am deeply disturbed by the fact that he won’t be removed from office and our future elections are still in jeopardy. Our democracy is in the balance.

They have to or Mitch makes them into idiots and he wins even more support. Remember after the Mueller report? There was strong support for impeachment then and Pelosi played politics. Now there are no options other than to outright lose the war. I suggest we win the battle and not have a loss even if it is just a draw and permit the greatest abuse the the impeachment power to play out with impunity.

We need to play this card.

The war is for the votes of the American people and a prolonged impeachment trial will only reduce enthusiasm to remove these traitors from office.
