PSA regarding Windows 10 automatically installing graphics drivers

One of the more frustrating things about Windows 10 is the updating system. In Windows 7 and 8, you had a lot of control over the update system. You could set it all to work automatically, to automatically check and download but not install, to automatically check but not download, or to just not check at all unless you tell it to. You could also elect to hide any updates you didn't want, allowing the rest to install. In Windows 10, Windows will check for updates no matter what. There's a "defer upgrade" option that seems to "delay" updates, but it doesn't stop checking and it just bluntly stops all update installations. The frustrating part about this is drivers -- PC enthusiasts enjoy having control over the drivers they have installed, especially graphics drivers. It allows us to avoid buggy drivers, install beta drivers if we want, etc. But Windows 10 doesn't care, its automatic update system will overwrite whatever drivers you have installed. I thought it wouldn't do this if I had the latest AMD drivers from their website already installed, but it did. And the frustrating part was that the AMD driver from Windows Update seemed to remove the Catalyst Control Center! I got a lot of use out of the CCC, enabling custom AA settings in games, enabling VSR, overclocking, etc. Setting the computer to never install driver updates through "System" in the Control Panel did nothing to help. Every time I removed the Windows Update-installed drivers and reinstalled the driver package from AMD's website, Windows would think that my graphics card driver needed an update and overwrote it.

Turns out Microsoft has a separate downloadable tool that re-enables hiding updates in Windows 10. You can get it here. The tool checks what updates are available to your PC, and allows you to hide them from being installed. I uninstalled the Windows Update AMD drivers, reinstalled the official AMD driver package, and then ran this tool before Windows Update had a chance to check for updates. Sure enough, the tool detected an AMD driver update, and I selected to hide it. I went into Windows Update and made it check for updates, and the AMD driver did not show up. Success! Why Microsoft saw fit to take away the option to hide updates in Windows Update itself when the system in Windows 7 and 8 worked just fine, I have no idea. But this definitely works. This has probably been mentioned in the Operating Systems section, but I don't think it's been mentioned in VC&G, so hopefully this is helpful.

tl;dr: Microsoft released a tool for hiding updates in Windows 10. You can use it to hide graphics driver updates and prevent Windows Update from overwriting whatever drivers you have already installed.

I never get updates for drivers, I wonder what is different between the systems it works on and the systems it doesn't.

You may want to check your update history. I didn't even realize Windows 10 was doing it to me until Catalyst Control Center up and disappeared.

This would have been absolutely infuriating during the first two years of Windows 8; my office PC and laptop run Intel HD 3000 and 4000 integrated and both experienced memory leaks with all driver updates from Windows Update and most updates directly from Intel; it had to be the stock initial release that came bundled with 8 for the longest time because Intel is worse at coding drivers than AMD.

Have to try this out when I get home. Lost Freesync CP option and FS functionality mid windows session. Sure enough see W10 device manager has updated driver over 15.7.1 (also new driver install folder in c:AMD, and entry in window update history). However, W10 add\remove programs doesn't show windows update driver update. Fix for me was to keep driver update, but switch driver to 15.7.1 in device manager (screens cycled to black screen back to windows and catalyst CP showed FS enabled again.

Thanks for the tip. I switched back to 15.7.1 from whatever driver Windows had installed. So far no AMD driver is showing up in the update hiding tool though. I am anticipating some endless battles with W10 next time I install a beta driver. Odds are, that it will keep trying to reinstall the latest WHQL driver.

Use DDU and have it disable gpu driver auto update.

If you mean disable automatic driver installation in "Control Panel>System>Advanced System Settings>Hardware>Device Installation Settings", that didn't work for me. Windows Update would still automatically install graphics drivers overwriting whatever I had installed.

In order to uninstall the driver that Windows Update installed, you need to go into Control Panel>Device Manager>Display Adapters, and uninstall the graphics device with "delete device driver" checked. The AMD Catalyst Install Manager won't uninstall drivers installed through Windows Update, in case that's what either of you were trying to do.

Doesn't look like it's been mentioned yet, it's worth noting that it's something of a temporary fix:

"To temporarily prevent the driver or update from being reinstalled until a new driver or updated fix is available, a troubleshooter is available that provides a user interface for hiding and showing Windows Updates and drivers for Windows 10. You can obtain and run the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter by downloading it from the Microsoft Download Center."

There doesn't seem to be a time limit or anything. Microsoft words it as "temporarily" because of course they want you installing whatever driver they send your way and seem to have no understanding that people may just want to decline the installation altogether. But this tool seems to effectively enable that.

Thanks, that fixed it. Really tempted to upgrade to Pro just so I can go back to micromanaging my updates the normal way.

Useful utility but it is ridiculous that Microsoft didn't integrate this into Windows update in the first place. In fact they didn't have to change much of anything from Windows 8. If MS is not careful they will end up getting sued, if a particularly bad update gets pushed onto a large number of systems and compromises a company or worse the security of a government network things could get really ugly.

I believe there's a way to disable the automatic update service in Windows 10, such that you can still run manual update checks whenever you want without issue but it will no longer automatically check or auto update Windows 10. In Windows 7 this was through services.msc. Not sure if Win 10 has an equivalent to that.

No issues with drivers updating for me. I disabled the "receive drivers by Windows Update option" and rolled back several drivers for one issue or another. Windows has not tried to update those drivers since, nor has it installed any more.

I understand there are reports of this not working for some, but that seem like a bug. It works correctly for me and should be fixed in the future I would assume.

Hey Red Hawk,

I came across your post on google about video drivers and windows 10. I have the Asus K52JR-X2.. not sure how different it is from yours, the specs all seem the same. What did you do to get Win10 to work? I just get a black screen with any newer AMD driver. I tried the latest from AMD and the one windows installs. The only way I can get my screen back is to get an older driver and manually install it, however than I cannot do any video playback for some reason. I not really up to speed anymore on these delicate issues, anything you could recommend would be greatly appreciated.

It works for me. And of course you cannot ignore the auto-update feature built into the driver itself. Therefor there are two auto-update instances, the Windows Update and the built-in AMD feature. Both need to be disabled. I'm not sure many know about the driver built-in. You can disable it thru Catalyst/Info/Software Update.

When MS pushes you a new build that setting resets to default. You need to disable driver updates every build.

Windows 10 ate up 3GB of My Broadband and still so much angry! I followed this:

right click on Start Menu ==> system ==>Advanced system Settings ==> Hardware Tab ==>Device Installation Settings ==> Choose "never install driver software from windows update"

It works.
