Supposedly there is a 100k Chase Sapphire Reserve targetted offer going around. I've only heard this from a couple sources and they aren't yet sure of the validity.

Regardless. I'm FINALLY under 5/24 so if it comes around I'll apply in a heartbeat (and x2 for the wife as well).

Wow, big update.

More ways to earn your Annual $300 Travel Credit
There are more ways to earn your annual $300 Travel Credit. Through June 30, 2021, gas station and grocery store purchases will count toward earning your Travel Credit. You’ll also earn points on these purchases. And, as always, after your first $300 in travel purchases, you’ll immediately start earning 3x points on travel. All with your Sapphire Reserve card.

Earn 3x points on grocery store purchases
You can now earn 3x total points on up to $1,000 in grocery store purchases per month from November 1–April 30, 2021, including pickup and eligible grocery store delivery services. It's automatic—no activation required.

The grocery earn is nice, especially combined with Pay Yourself Back, but low limit for a 7-month period. Is it still a "travel" card ? Glad to see this though, as I've been pondering what to do with my CSR.
They did 5X points earlier this year, with also having the pay yourself back tied to it, which was a nice perk considering my Discover had already rotated off of groceries.

The groceries tie-off doesn't help me that much considering my Amex gets 6X back up to 6k a year, and I don't think I've maxed it yet. Worst case, I might buy some gift cards as we get closer to the end of the year to try to max out the point earn and use the money elsewhere. Did this earlier for my Chase Free by buying $1500 in Home Depot gift cards.

I have to give Chase credit. They're working hard to keep the CSR business. I'm keeping my card another year hoping travel opens back up. Meanwhile I will just keep accumulating points. It sucks because I was playing around with flights and saw nonstop Delta flights to places like St Thomas Virgin Islands, Liberia Costa Rica, and Aruba for like 25,000 points for November. If not for Covid, I would've booked those flights in a heartbeat.

Anyone had both the Sapphire Preferred and Reserved? I’ve had the Preferred for a few years, but ever since I opened it Chase keeps asking me if I want to go to the Reserved. They asked me again last week as I was accessing my deposit box. I know it has a 550$ annual, plus the second card for my wife. There use to be much more traveling, now it’s caring for our baby . Though might be getting a European trip in late next year depending on COVID. Can’t really see anything in the list of features that makes Reserve all that worth it if you can’t jet set every weekend, which we’re a few years from with our new child.

Cant.

At least - not under 1 name. You're limited to 1 Sapphire card at a time from what I recall.

So only chance is if one is under you and one under your spouse.

I had both in the past but I downgraded the Preferred to second Chase Freedom card so I could get around the 5% $1,500 quarter limit. But now I read Chase no longer let you open both Preferred and Reserved as primary cardholder.

Reserve is much better card so it's pointless to keep Preferred if you have both.

You can go through an upgrade process via customer service. You can do it via the online portal and get a decision in 4 hours or less.

We have preferred with my wife and reserve for me. We opened one of each to take advantage of the sign ups (CSP had 80k sign up bonus at the time) but we don't use it. I thankfully got the annual fee for this year dropped to $450 due to COVID and all the pay yourself back and other bonus categories has definitely made the card even more valuable to me this year than usual.

I've never crunched the numbers to see if the extra 25% redemption credit is worth it, but I'm going to keep telling myself it is.

Edit: Just to clarify, we'll be cancelling the CSP this year before it comes up for renewal and keeping the CSR.

I wouldn’t keep both, I’d go through the upgrade process for my preferred card. You can do it in the portal and get a decision in under 4 hours, or just talk to customer service for Preferred members. It’s been open long enough that I’d still get the current new card 50K points for doing the upgrade.

Are you sure you get the signup bonus points? I was under the impression you only got the promotional point bonus for new account opening and not for product change. I know when I switched from Preferred to extra Chase Freedom card, I didn't get any promotional bonus like the signup cash. I was told by Chase rep I wouldn't but I was fine with it.

I’d have to verify with them but I was told if the account was over 2 years old you could get the signup points as part of the upgrade process from preferred to reserve. Not sure on the Freedom side. I’ve still got one of those cards in the drawer somewhere.

I have no idea how to spend $1k on groceries per month.

...unless they count booze? Oh then I can do that.... (not that it helps here in MD, where there is one grocery store/county that is allowed to sell alcohol...fucking fascists)

Have wife + kids and $1,000/month is groceries is easy heh.

I agree if I was single I could probably keep it to less than $500... Less than $700 even with booze.

Yeah, make sure you verify preferably in writing that you get the signup bonus even as upgrade. I seriously doubt it though. And as for Freedom card, you really need Freedom, Freedom Unlimited, and Sapphire Reserve to make most of Chase Rewards ecosystem. If you're not, you're really limiting your ability to quickly rack up points by just using your cards in everyday transactions.

I have never heard of getting a sign-up bonus when upgrading or downgrading - unless they SPECIFICALLY email you an offer for it.

For instance, AMEX has emailed me wanting me to upgrade my blue cash to the blue-cash prefered or whatever for a $150 bonus.

Ahhh! I misread the offer. I thought it was $1000 total for 7 months, haha! OK, $1000 per month is great, and no way will I get close to that amount.

looks like Chase is offering what appears to be random retention statement credits (either $150 or $250)...you just have to call and see if it is available for your account...

here is the link to the thread on Slick Deals about it..

I was able to get $250 credit for my account

My renewal cost dropped by a couple hundred earlier in the year, wonder if I can take advantage of this too.

sounds like the annual fee is being billed at $450 not $550 yet (because of COVID??)...

based on those posts in the Slick Deal threads, the retention credit is pretty random...the only way to find out if you are eligible is to call...some have even reported that they had to call back a few times after getting denied initially...

I like savings as much as anyone but not sure how badly I want to call multiple times and threaten to cancel especially if I'm going uphill since they know they've got me for 10 more months

I do it all the time.

Credit Cards for annual fees... It's worth a shot - especially for those that are $300+.

I have other cards like Marriott cards that have a $100 annual fee, which I don't really mind because they give me a free night as an annual award.

But I mean... also with the likes of Comcast and their stupid shit with contract-pricing. The moment I see the higher bill is the moment I call get it adjusted.

At the end of the day - it never hurts. You only lose if you don't try

knowing that others were able to get the credit after trying multiple times would be the only reason I would have done that...if that fact was not known, I would have tried maybe two or three times and then called it quits...

So I just signed up for the United card that you can get 65k points on, expecting to get automatically approved, and I didn't get automatically approved. I wanted to use the card to book a flight shortly but now it will take longer.

Is there any number I can call and talk to someone about why there was a delay that could potentially speed the process up? I called the main Chase number but all they could tell me was the status.

I'm guessing it didn't go through immediately because we just refinanced though.

It could be any number of reasons. I didn't instantly get approved for the Sapphire Reserve card if I remember correctly. Underwriter called me few days later to manually approved it after talking with me. I think it was because I had lot of Chase cards and they were trying to limit their credit exposure to me.

I'm starting to use my Chase Ultimate Rewards points for flights again. Booked flight on Delta to Austin for next month. About to book another flight on Delta to Cancun for May. I was waiting on the vaccine before flying again, and it feels good to finally be able to book something. Now I'm just waiting on rest of the world to open back up. So many countries are still not allowing in leisure travelers, or they still have mandatory 2 weeks government quarantine.

holy crap, how much do you eat? I can easily survive on less than $200 total food cost per month (including eating out) if I want to...basically did it for year. Even had 2 of us on about $300/month total food cost.

I don't really do that so much now, but it's pretty easy to eat well, cheaply, though you have to put some brain power into planning it all out. It gets kind of tiring, haha.
