beach visits usually aren't active or varied enough for me

i've never taken a vacation to relax, i take them to wear myself out

there's still too many interesting museums and historic places i want to see

maybe when i retire i'll be able to relax on vacation
People have their preference. Fortunately, I pretty much like everything. Same with my wife. We live to eat. We live to travel. We'll travel half way around the world just to eat. Heck, we flew to Busan, South Korea, just to eat seafood. That was almost 30 hour flight one way because of transfers just to eat fresh seafood and see the ocean. If you don't love traveling and food, that might sound crazy. But to me, it's crazy not to do it.

I don't trust anyone who doesn't like the beach. Only miserable people don't like the sun and the ocean.

There's nothing I dislike about the beach, but I find that vacationing there for extended periods gets old, very fast. I don't need to sit and stare at water to have fun. ...I mean, I've been spoiled by some beautiful, solitary ocean-front natural properties, so I guess it doesn't do much for me anywhere else.

I like exploring diverse places and cultures. It's definitely more stressful, and can be mentally draining, but I find that is all part of it.

Food is a big part of traveling for me, and since I don't really like seafood that much, I have much less use for beaches. And even if I did care about seafood....it's not like the food at fancy beach destinations is going to be uniquely special compared to most others. It's about the same everywhere you go. (I'm not considering Asia here, because all bets are off. They will eat their own toes if it looks interesting enough)

All I know is this is the view from one of the balconies in the place I rented for May and I cannot wait to see this for the first time in over a year.

Where's that? I mean which property?

My problem is that to get the most out of relaxing on a beach I want it to be deserted - to the point that I'd be ok if my wife wasn't there And those locations are very few and far between. Easier for me to get close to that hiking somewhere than a beach trip so I say I prefer other trips to beach trips

If memory serves you need to travel more in general

We've made alterations to our plans to hit my favorite restaurant in the world. Seems a bit odd to have one that is on a different continent that I have visited multiple times on multiple different trips. And here in MI our seafood is not the best quality and\or very pricey so your comment hits home. We always look for good seafood places when we get close to an ocean

Depends where I go and why I'm going. I enjoy crabbing, digging for clams and mussels, catching scallops and conchs, picking up oysters, hunting for octopus and lobsters, catching fish, etc. There's so much to do or not to do. It's your choice. Some people like to watch the birds and watch the pelicans dive for fish. Or you can surf, paddle board, swim, snorkel, scuba, etc. Anywhere you go, it's what you make of it. Doesn't matter if you go to the mountains, lake, city, etc. Your attitude determines whether you have fun or not. It's why it's so important to travel with compatible partner or just go by yourself. There's nothing worse than traveling with Debbie Downer. They can turn any trip miserable.

When I'm in Asia, I love getting up early and going to the wholesale fish market and watching all the crazy action. It's amazing to watch the auctions and fishmongers at work. Or catching a fishing boat that's coming in and buying their catch of the day from them before they sell it to the wholesalers.

For this Cancun trip, I don't have any plans other than to relax at the resort and spoil my wife. She can get her favorite spa and massage treatments. I will take her shopping at Hermes in Cancun and let her buy whatever she wants. Eat empanadas, Caesar salad, and grilled octopus at Puerto Madero like we do on every Cancun trip. Order room service and eat and drink at poolside and on the beach. Doing absolutely nothing but spending time with my wife and thanking her for sharing 20 years of her life with me.

One of the reasons why we went to Bogota, Colombia, was because my daughter wanted hot chocolate with cheese. She saw some Youtube video where they mentioned that was a thing in Colombia. So I booked weekend trip to Bogota so she could have her hot chocolate with cheese. I will travel for food.

Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina.

We went to Sapphire Beach like 4x when we were there last March and liked it. Going to be even better now without the cruisers there. We weren't at a property right on the beach last time but now that we will have a 9 month old with us we wanted to be able to just go back in the room right away if we're out and he starts acting up.

It's pretty easy to find those kinds of beaches on most islands I've been to. The only one that I'd say it's not really as easy is Aruba. But we do go to smaller beaches there too on the north west part of the island that have less spots for people to sit and it's just different than being in the hotel areas. Baby Beach has gotten a lot more popular too but we typically find a spot under a tree there when we go and aren't very close to people.

Best place I've seen for deserted beaches is definitely the non-exquisite hotel kind of places. Went to Cook Islands for our honeymoon - water was blue and clear as can be - absolutely empty beach all around in many places.

Also plenty of nice places that are just little huts on the beach. Wasn't that expensive at all, probably mostly because it was just a simple guy that runs the place - has about 6-8 huts on his beach property, each having everything you would expect with bathrooms, air conditioning, and even meetups in the morning with other guests for a free breakfast.

I've not found that easily even in the Caribbean since I mean as few signs of humans as possible (but will also concede I haven't been to every beach on every island)

Like this since there was no one around despite the footprints:

Or, ideally, this - a 45 min kayak to at least a mile of completely empty beach with pristine yet ungroomed sand:

Sapphire Beach in St. Thomas? I love that beach. Where I saw my first sea turtle and shark while snorkeling. Last time we were there was when wife was pregnant. We were snorkeling looking for turtles, and she got tired. A guy who had anchored his boat let her hang on for a while.

I really enjoy beaches, but I like to move around, get some strange. One thing I like about cruising. Bad thing is when you get to a really nice one you never have enough time.

Yeah we were at that beach probably 3-4 times while in St. Thomas the first time for a week. We stayed at Point Pleasant which was like 5 minutes away which had no beach but has awesome views as it is up high on hills overlooking the ocean.

We also found an awesome beach literally right next to Sapphire Beach that had nobody on it. We just walked like 2 minutes to the left around the corner and bam, instant private beach.

I see Southwest is doing companion pass til 2/28/22 and 30k points for opening new Southwest Plus credit card. This offer is good until tomorrow 3/10. I assume this is pretty good deal or is this type of Southwest CC deal always available?

30k sounds low. Companion pass is normal.

Say what?

Companion pass isn't normal - well, it wasn't "normal" until we had this pandemic where air travel drastically slowed.

30k points ontop of a 1 year companion pass definitely isn't bad. What I'm used to are cards with 60-70k mile sign-up bonus, and then I get two of them (1 being a business card version), and it stacks up to get 120-140k miles which qualifies for companion pass.

That's what I remember - Chase southwest cards that you stacked for something like 60k points each and if opened in the right time frame, gave you two years of companion passes. This was pre-COVID and I haven't paid attention to the SW cards the last couple years so I don't know if they just significantly degraded their offerings or what.

I thought I remembered people opening 2 cards to get the companion pass. So I thought getting companion pass with just 1 card was pretty good deal. But the more I look at the deal, the less attractive it looks. First, there's the $69 annual fee for the card. Second, I looked at the flights to various cities and so many of them are transfers and not direct flight from Atlanta. I don't need direct flights all the time but so many SW flights seems to involve transfers. Other discount airlines like Spirit and Frontier also fly to pretty much all cities SW flies and many of their flights are direct nonstop. Fares on Spirit and Frontier are dirt cheap and all my wife and I need for quick short trips are our backpack. Maybe Atlanta is just bad starting hub and market for Southwest.

To me that deal reads as though you have until 2/28/2022 to get 125k points in order to earn the companion pass, instead of having until 12/31/2021 to get it. And on top of that, the sign on bonus is only 30k points.

I didn't read it as though you get the companion pass for signing up + 30k points. So this seems like a pretty crappy sign up bonus to me.

I did not read the details though.

EDIT:

n/m I just learned how to read lol.

If I wasn't already my wife's companion until the end of this year, and she wasn't already my companion until the end of this year, then I'd sign up for it. I'm going to just wait until they put out some of the 50k/60k deals hopefully to sign up again.

It's an ok deal IMO. Easy to get but personally I prefer getting the Companion Pass with points instead of a direct credit card promotion because the companion pass is then good for the remainder of the calendar year its earned in plus the entire following year. It's more coordination but gives an extra year of use and allows better chance of overlapping Companion Passes. Given the previous history of offers its been possible to earn a companion pass in the first quarter of the year for pretty much every year since 2014 or so.

The downside to SW is that they are more of a point to point airline instead of hub and spoke so they tend to have less direct flights in general than other airlines from major hubs like Atlanta. I usually end up with a connection in MDW, BWI or DEN when flying them but, with Detroit being a Delta fortress hub, SW is often a little cheaper than alternatives even before factoring the 2-for-1 CP. The upside is typically better connection options for smaller destinations and, theoretically, cheaper prices to service the smaller destinations. An additional downside is around irregular operations (weather\system delays) as SW resources are spread out while a hub and spoke has centralized resources at the hub that can be easily reallocated as need be

I'm lik 35 minutes from IAD, DCA, and BWI.

So I got a SW hub at BWI and use that a lot for those points. They have direct flights to a few places we like and easy 1 layover flights in FLL to other places.

Then IAD is a United hub which is nice too, although that airport is by far my least favorite of the 3.

I applied for the Southwest card but didn't get auto approved. It said they would review my application and let me know. I think they're going to send me decline letter. I bet my high income figure drew the big red flag on their system and the computer rejected it because it thought I was lying about my gross income. I should've lied on the application and left out a zero instead of truthfully answering. I'm pretty sure that's the reason because my credit score is well above 800. Maybe one of their human underwriters will review my application and approve it. If not, that's ok too.

It's Chase - I don't think it's likely they care and they deal with plenty of whales. I sat on a rewards card panel and they asked an income question and had a $1M-$9,999,999 range and a $10+M range. If you don't hear in a couple days I'd give the personal card reconsideration line a call 1-888-270-2127

Yeah as @Exterous said if you really want it asap, just call that number.

I applied for my United card on the weekend and didn't get auto approved. I called that number and had my card by Wednesday lol and booked my flights that same night to get the points + free baggage for 2.
