Looks like the Seagate 7200.9 series is finally available. It looks like the 160GB version is just one platter, which is a nice jump in arial density over the 7200.8's.

Anandtech 7200.9 preview is up!

SATA/ATA
3Gb/s interface
Hot Plug & Hot Swap
NCQ
5 year warrantee

Froogle showing more and more 7200.9's daily.

Page Computers currently has the best price ($354.55) for the 500GB model.

I've got the 200GB 7200.8 myself. It's probably the best drive I've ever had. Whisper quiet, quick and runs very cool. I can't wait to try out these 7200.9's!

Quick point. The link you gave has the 160GB 7200.9 listed as only having 2MB cache. I'm presuming this is a typo on their part given the 500GB drive has 16mb cache.

Does anyone know if they are going to be releasing drives all throughout the range i.e. 300gb, 250gb, etc. etc. If they are I'm all over 3 of these puppies.

Capacity 40, 80, 120, 160, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500GB I suspect the entire product range will be available in the next few days. The largest capacity (500GB) is usually the last to be released, and it's out now.

My guess is all models will be available very soon.

I could use the 500 GB for my FLAC music server, but 73 cents per GB is a bit high these days.

Exactly what I'm going to use the 300gb, which should be way cheaper, for. Huge drives are all the rage so they're pretty expensive at the moment. The 300gb will have to compete with the other offerings from Maxtor, WD, and Hitachi where as the 500GB only has the Hitachi to compete with.

The cache varies from 2MB to 16MB depending on capacity. Source.

QFT. I love my 7200.8. However SMART reports it running hotter than my Hitachi 7K250???

I'm going to assume the price for the 500GB will drop a tad when more stores get them in, but dear lord, $365 for 500GB. I could get two 7200.8 400GB's for roughly that price. Maybe this will push the prices for the 7200.8's down a bit and I'll pick up one or two more 400GB drives.

Where the hell can you get 800GB's for $365?

Not quite that price, more like around $400. In the refurb section. However at those prices and for the storage involved, $400 for 800GB is not bad. And before anyone say "but it's refurbs!" I'll say that I've bought at least 5 refurbed HD's and all perform like new. If it doesn't, just RMA it. I always give refurbed drives a couple of months of testing before storing anything that's not backed up on it.

It sure is!

With prices dipping to 25-40 cents per GB (AR) nowadays, this is indeed a bit steep. I suspect this model will be down to 55 cents or so per GB once the supply channel is flooded, and the early adopters have already bought.

Finally, quality large drives. I could use two of those 500GB drives.

They'd made a nice addition to my 300GBx2 drives.

Product Info ST3500641AS
Price $365.00
ST3500641AS
BARRACUDA 7200.9 500GB SATA-II 3.5LP 8.5MS 7200RPM 16MB 3GB/S

This will make a good storage drive. Still, I doubt that it's performance will come close to two Maxtor 10's 250 GB, which can be had for about $220
