I figure this would be a good place to ask this...

I have a Seagate 7200.7 120gb drive and a 7200.8 250gb drive. Both of them suffer from an idle buzz. I read about it on the web and it happens to other people as well.

Whenever there is no activity, the disk will make a slight buzz sound for 30-45 seconds. Then it will stop. Or it will stop when you access the disk. The buzz is intermittent.

I thought it was just an anomaly of the 7200.7 disks, but when I bought a brand new 250gb 7200.8 a couple weeks ago, the drive still has the idle buzz. Does anyone else have this happen?

I read somewhere that the disk is performing some sort of diagnostics. But every few minutes or so is rediculous. I bought Seagate drives because they are so quiet. But Seagate is building drives that make noise on purpose! Grrrr!

I still have both my Seagates, but I just bought a WD 320gb drive. And it's awesome! I'm not sure if I'll ever buy another Seagate.

Maximum PC Aug 2005
Barracuda 7200.9
"It will be Segate's first SATA 3G drive, and will also sport the now-standard 16MB cache. One interesting design change is the move from three to four platters. (Hitachi's 500GB drive uses five platters.)"

Thanks for the info toatett, looks like this question is now answered.

I'm a bit disappointed, I was really hoping for a 3-platter, 500GB drive.

My money is on 4platter & 133GB/platter = 500GB (actually 533GB but anyway ).

It will be a winner either way. (3 or 4 platter )

Wait for the .9. You get 16mb cache and hopefully will avoid the minor issues with the .8 series. Only problem is that nobody seems to know when the midrange .9 drives will be out.

Where the hell can you get 800GB's for $365?

easily! 4x$75 = $300

this is for 4x 200gb drives. not saying they'd be seagate. but you know. its still 800gb

I just heard back from ZZF on an ETA for the .9 series. They have no idea when they're coming in.

We don't have a solid ETA either. They are in the system, but none of the distributors are listing any ETA's yet. I can keep you guys posted though if you want. It may at least give a general sense of when they'll be widely available from any retailer.

Thanks TankGuys, that would be great.

I've been waiting for these for months. I almost pulled the trigger and bought two from the link I provided in the original post, but I couldn't justify the cost per/GB. I'm sure there are many others in the same boat.

So.. how long do you suggest I wait...? I'm making a list of computer parts to build a computer and hopefully I don't have to wait too long:

Well all it comes down to now is reviews please...

What I really want to know is how quiet these things will be. The 7200.8 seeking noises were too loud. Also their access speeds could have been faster.

Can't hear either of my HDs above my fans =/. Even with my fans turned down too. Well I know Seagates are ALWAYS a little slower in seek times....

Nobody has them yet and unfortunately nobody seems to know when they're coming in. It's kind of odd.

It's nothing odd. Seagate has always been "paper lauching" it's product. Remember how long it took to have shipping 7200.8 after they announced it?
