I agree with Pariah...the article seemed to be more of an advertisement than a detailed article (w/ benchies)...

I have been reading Anandtech since it first came into existence...and lately I have seen them slipping...not sure what is going on there....

From anand's preview:
"The 160GB platter has only gone into the 80GB drive, which uses a single side and single head, and the 160GB drive, which uses both sides of the platter with 2 heads. The 400GB model still uses its original three 133GB platter design that was implemented in the 7200.8, while the new 500GB drive uses four 125GB platters. "

It has been reported we're going to see 640GB drives as soon as 2Q 2006. My guess is Seagate could release a 640GB model now (4x160) if they wanted to, but that doesn't make sense from a business standpoint.

They'll milk the market with these 125GB x 4 platter 500GB drives, and release the 640GB models when they need to. It's nice to know the technology is already here, with these 160GB platters. Past 640GB, my guess is they'll switch to perpendicular technology.

Should be an exciting year for storage in 2006.

I got my 500GB drive today from Mwave. I ran 2 quick tests using Sandra and HDTach. My system is a X2 4400+ @ 2.7Ghz on a DFI NF4 Ultra. I'm using the 6.53 Nvidia drivers.

Could you imagine the 640GB Seagate drive going perpendicular that could be 6TB in a 3.5" form factor. Now thats impressive.

Thanks for uploading results! Do you have another HD in your computer that you can compare these with?

I could be wrong in reading this, but are the 7200.9 tests you've shown, slower than these test results in a review on thetechzone.com?

I hate to rain on everyone's 7200.8 Parade, but has anyone even bothered looking at this? Maybe Storagereview botched the review, but it looks to me like the 7200.8 was a dog. I really hope the 7200.9 is true to the spirit fo the 7200.7, which is to this day one of the best performing IDE drives available.

When do we get to find out the platter config on these damned things?

I have my single platter 160 GB sata 300 NCQ drive from New Egg for about $100. Ordered at midnight, shipped the next day, dropped off by ups the next day. NewEgg is crazy good. Anyhoo its 8 meg cache, only the monster drives seem to have 16 meg caches, which seems to make sense.

I'm building a new system, but I'll try and provide some benches compaired to my really old seagate 120 gb ide.

PS how would I measure HDD performance other than Sandra? I dont know how to accurately time photoshop renders and crap like that.

PPS, this is my first SATA drive, anything I need to know about building a new system compaired with IDE, I'm using the DFI lanparty UT NF4 Ultra D.

TIA

Hey Pitbrz, why are your random read/writes around 46MB/s? I found a 7200.7 SATA clocked in at 9MB/s using Sisoft. Are those numbers right? Im interested in the 160GB SATA-II.5 ST3160812AS vs the 160GB SATA-I ST3160827AS, no RAID using a VIA KT600 chipset.

Can someone who bought the single platter 160gig drive post in regards to noise. I am looking to get 2x of those drives and set up a RAID 0 Array (Not for speed or anything, simply because i want to learn about RAID and work with it).

Inaudable. Completely silent in my P-180 regardless of read/write/idle. This is in part due to the rubber grommet mountings of the case though too. I love this drive. I've always been partial to seagate drives from my SCSI apple days. I've had a few duds in the old Meadalist line, but ostly they have been great.

My older IDE Seagate drives are definately much noisier, even audible at idle, though I really have to listen to single it out over the various fans. I'm a musician so I have a pretty good ear for that.

Can't pick out the 7200.9 even when I try, and thats in a relatively quiet case.

So does anyone know what happened to the 7200.9 line? I only see up to 160gb and the 500gb models in stores. Where are the 300 and 400gb ones??

I spoke with a Seagate Presales representative today. He said the 250 and 300 GB drives should hit the market sometime in Q1 2006. He would not pin it down to one month or three from now.

Those the only ones that aren't currently out?
I was thinking of getting 2 200's.

I was only interested in the 300 GB SATA 7200.9, so I did not ask about every drive. The model list is here. The number for Presales in the Americas is 1-877-271-3285.
