Having been in quite a few car accidents both belted & un-belted I can say for a fact that I'll never drive a car without wearing a seatbelt & anyone riding in my car will buckle up or they can get out & walk.

I've been injured in a minor fender-bender when un-belted & walked away completely unscathed from a 30+ mph head-on collision when belted securely into the front passenger seat so theres no way anyone will convince me seatbelts are a bad idea.

I'm all about wearing seat belts and I do consistently as do my passengers.

However, if I am correct in understanding the accident you say the car she was riding is was t-boned on her side of the car?

You do realize a seat belt does very little to protect you in that kind of crash. It's usually deadly because there is no crumple zone on the sides and the passenger's head hits the side frame and window quite violently, belted or not. This is why side impact airbags were developed.

Seatbelt has save me from my stupidity at driving a couple of times. Walked away with my cuts and bruises.

It would have prevented the injury that killed her (the left side of her skull was crushed), but there could have been other injuries, yes.

A "good, solid T-Bone" impact will almost always fook up the person being boned. The fact that they had the massive secondary injuries on the opposite side are a direct result of not having a seatbelt, no doubt.

I once "extricated" a person that was trapped under the console in a van, with spidering (that round, shattered mark on the windshield made by a head). Come to find out during the process that he was ASLEEP IN THE REAR OF THE VAN when they struck a utility pole head-on.

I could go on for pages about unrestrained occupants and senseless injuries.

I feel uncomfortable without a seatbelt., just so used to it. Keeps you in place in normal driving too...

*Considering using a helmet in a car*

Anyone remember that European seatbelt commercial where some fruit goes flying around inside the car because he isn't wearing his seatbelt? I don't want 150 lb projectiles in my car in the event of an accident, EVERYBODY puts their seatbelts on, or I don't drive.

No one is allowed to ride in my suv unless they wear a seatbelt.
Like someone mentioned, their unrestrained body could be a projectile and/or, they could also sue me.

Thanks for the reality check OP, hopefully someone will learn from your posting.

A seatbelt isn't going to do much for you if you're t-boned. They're not meant for side-to-side support. Still though, she should have been wearing one.

Seatbelts, FTW
Seatbelt laws, FTL

I'd argue against the laws if it only affected the person not wearing the seatbelt. But its not as simple as that. Person not wearing seatbelt gets into accident. Lack of restraint throws said person around cabin causing him/her to lose control of vehicle and thus exacerbating the accident by taking out a couple more vehicles. Insurance claims are much bigger since there are a couple more vehicles added to the accident now, and also, lack of restraint causes severe injuries on said person - adding to the medical claims. Now since insurance is paying out more, they increase my premiums by a bit even though I wear a seatbelt.

Taking a dump every day helps prevent colon cancer. People who don't raise the medical premiums of people who do take dumps every day. Perhaps we should pass a law requiring daily craps? Some kind of gps monitor ensuring everyone spends enough time on the can would work.
