I'll keep it short and simple. It's another one of my personal experiences in the ER threads...

The scenario this time is a 24 yr old female unrestrained passenger which is suddenly and violently T-boned on the passenger side by a driver who wasnt paying attention and ran a red light. Now details at this point are unclear but the girl obviously was pushed left by the impact but we're not sure if her head hit the center console, the steering wheel or the dashboard but whatever it was....basically crushed the entire left side of her skull. From the base of the skull to the top, from the cheek to the back of the head, crushed, depressed inward skull fracture. Went about an inch or two inward. Despite there not being much hope we still worked on her for about 3 hours. Neurosurgery came down and declared that hope was lost and she was clinically brain dead. Therefore, she went up to ICU where they withdrew ventilator support with the permission of the family. She died early this evening after being off life support for a few hours. At least she didnt have to suffer for very long.

Lesson learned I suppose is that your seatbelt can save your life. Or perhaps minimize the damage. Maybe it could have saved her life, maybe not. Either way the driver of the vehicle walked away with minor cuts and bruises and he was wearing a seatbelt. Take that for what its worth...but for the sake of your own life wear a damn seatbelt

I wouldn't have posted in this thread at all, but since you posted this, I wanted to be the first that seat belt laws are stupid, but it is unwise not to wear one.

Why? They know the consequences.

Because there's no logical reason not to...that's why.

I'd say not wearing one just to spite assholes like you who can't mind their own business is a good reason.

A few of my friends don't like wearing them if they are in the back seat. When they ride with me they do or I don't move. Their argument is always the same, that they will only hurt themselves. Well, maybe, or what about when you become a projectile inside of the car potentially becoming a hazard to everyone else in the car.

Please continue not to use a seatbelt. Everybody's happy that way.

I agree with JM no seatbelt is dumb! (I should add that a close friend doesn't use a seatbelt and I wish he would)

Christ, why do people get their panties in such a ****** twist over seatbelts.

If you're going to be riding around without a seatbelt, then do us all a favor and staple a big "NO MEDICAL ATTENTION" sign to your chest, so that nobody has to waste any time or resources on you.

You're right that its your business to an extent, but it becomes a lot more people's business once you're in an accident and need medical attention.

why do you think they're stupid if you agree that wearing one is wise? yes, people should have the right to choose whether they should have to wear one or not. I'd argue against the laws if it only affected the person not wearing the seatbelt. But its not as simple as that. Person not wearing seatbelt gets into accident. Lack of restraint throws said person around cabin causing him/her to lose control of vehicle and thus exacerbating the accident by taking out a couple more vehicles. Insurance claims are much bigger since there are a couple more vehicles added to the accident now, and also, lack of restraint causes severe injuries on said person - adding to the medical claims. Now since insurance is paying out more, they increase my premiums by a bit even though I wear a seatbelt.

So you see, that person choosing not to wear seatbelt not only made my insurance premiums to go up, but also put other drivers' lives at risk when he/she lost control of the vehicle. And that is why we have seatbelt laws....to make the roads safer...for everyone

An improperly placed seatbelt can kill you just as easily as not wearing one at all. Don't place the lap belt on your abdomen, it goes over your pelvis. With it over your abdomen, a sudden/hard stop can pulverize your internal hollow organs and potentially severely damage your liver. The fun things you learn from the paramedics teaching your EMT-Basic class.

Nice...a personal attack because I disagree with you. I'd expect a little better out of a supposedly "elite" member...

BTW-Anyone who's stupid enough not to wear a seatbelt just to spite someone else must be one of the dumbest people on the planet...really. I can't think of a more ridiculous reason than that actually. Congrats! You win the dumbest post of the day award.

Putting on my seatbelt is the first thing I do when I get in a vehicle. It's subconscious too, just a habit. A good one I might add.

I won't move a car I'm driving unless all my passengers are wearing seatbelts. They're so comfortable these days, and do so much for your life... why wouldn't you wear them?

Meh I hardly wear one any more. Have a lot of stomach problems and hurt like hell most of the time, seatbelt just exacerbates it. You'd rather me drive around doped up on painkillers?

I'm not really worried about dying anyway. Don't have a wife or kids or anything, just me. Gotta go some time, might as well go out in style as a bloody pile of goop.

Right up until u crash, die and their parents sue you, then they aren't only hurting themselves anymore.
