Question - how do people know what Caste you are in? Sure if you are only around others who have known you since birth, but if you move to a new location - how would they know?

While it definitely had it's mis-use and issues in it's application, the caste system in it's theory is amazing in it's foresight to understand the complexity of society and have a clear upwards trend in the development of successful communities. In retrospective comparison, it's bears some similarities to feudalism, but appreciates a mendelian concept of procreation. This concept traveled east, and was refined as it made its way through China and Japan which both have implementations based off the "ruling philosophy".

Clearly, it has it's flaws in human rights etc. But in terms of societal structure it has it's merits for managing people and ensuring continuity in the overall progress of society.

India is comprised of many sub-ethnicities, much akin to Europe. Surname's are normally used for generic identification and community affiliation and having access to lineage also contributes to identification. If you want to see it in action, check out Shaadi.com the largest matrimonial site in the world that still uses these concepts.

in case anyone was ever wondering about it
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/indias-caste-system.html

this is why i liked Gandhi, he saw past the caste system

FYI the Buddha saw past that bullshit and did his best to end the caste system.

Gandhi is a poser that advocated ending untouchability for political gains. He still supported the caste system.

Untouchables

This was the start of a new campaign by Gandhi to improve the lives of the untouchables, whom he named Harijans, the children of God.[96] On 8 May 1933, Gandhi began a 21-day fast of self-purification and launched a one-year campaign to help the Harijan movement.[98]

Gandhi, although born into the Vaishya caste, insisted that he was able to speak on behalf of Dalits, despite the presence of Dalit activists such as Ambedkar.[99]

This new campaign was not universally embraced within the Dalit community, as Ambedkar condemned Gandhi's use of the term Harijans as saying that Dalits were socially immature, and that privileged caste Indians played a paternalistic role.

Ambedkar and his allies also felt Gandhi was undermining Dalit political rights.
Gandhi had also refused to support the untouchables in 1924–25 when they were campaigning for the right to pray in temples. Because of Gandhi's actions, Ambedkar described him as "devious and untrustworthy".[85]

As with everything, the human being has corrupted whatever he has touched. They take something deep, such as a religion like Hinduism, and transform it based on their little thoughts.

Same things happen in the Western world in a different way.

So you link to somebody who himself probably does not know this stuff firsthand. So what does that make you, a believer in third or fourth hand information?

Plus, why does it really matter what Gandhi thought or felt?

Go read Baasha's P&N threads.

Appreciate the recommendation but I think I will pass. Baasha's threads should not determine how one responds. I think I will just mind my own business though and let others act and respond how they wish. I couldn't help but notice the religious stuff, such as the cross and the name, and then the post associated with them.

I bet it's called something like "People with Money".

while in mumbai, we drove by the richest man in india's house

what could be more necessary?

Ambani, his wife and three children have moved into the building which is named Antilia, after a mythical Island. It contains a health club with a gym and dance studio, at least one studio, a ballroom, guestrooms and a range of lounges and a 50 seater cinema.
There is even an elevated garden with ceiling space to accommodate small trees.
The roof has three helicopter pads and there is also underground parking for 160 cars, which will come in handy for guests at Ambani's forthcoming housewarming party.

maybe if the caste system worked like termites or ants there would be benefits. but it has turned into a social elite system.

tribals or sikhs are not part of the caste system. neither are jains or buddhists.

That is one ugly house! With his cash you think he would have built something better - looks like legos on acid.
