I tend to manhandle onions while trying to find the right one as well. When I start rubbing my manhood while manhandling them is when you need to be worried

I do wash most of my produce though. I didn't used to but so many odd cases reported the last few years.

The contamination I worry about (and it's not worry, really, just awareness) about is when bacteria-laden excrement contaminates water used for vegetable and fruit fields.

I use dish soap and warm water to wash most produce, especially anything with a waxy coating like apples, cucumbers and peppers. Lettuce just gets rinsed or soaked in cold water. Mushrooms get rinsed and gently wiped with a soft sponge. I don't think I've ever washed an onion.

I don't wash produce when I get it home from the store, but instead when it's eaten or first cut, since any coatings help keep it fresher longer.

Just realize that dozens of others already did the same and hundreds have gone through the bin testing a few before choosing which ones they wanted.

This is why I don't touch any of this stuff.

I only go for meat that I can make into charcoal to be sure it's safe.

Yeah, and with onions, you can just peel the outer layer off.

But that's beside the point. It was just very weird to watch...there's a difference between selecting a good piece of produce and...well, what I saw just wasn't right

I wash all of my produce while bathing in the shower. It saves time by doing both activities at once. Installing a garbage disposal in the bathtub really helps cut down on any vegetable waste from accumulating.

Why do I get the feeling there's already a Howto video on Youtube for this?

Also, you should always wash melons. Something you might not think to wash, since you don't eat the rind, but cutting into them will drag any dirt or bacteria through the fruit. Same thing with lemons, limes and oranges, if you'll be cutting through them.

Was the dude Asian (Chinese)? Every time I go to grocery shopping all the Chinese mothers check the expiry date, big/small, check if there's bruises, smell and weighing the item with both hands lol. Not being racist, my friend is Chinese and she does the same. I think we all should act like that. Why blind pick something and then releasing x is out of date etc.

The instructions for the garbage disposal will state that you need to dismantle the latch hasp from the main drainage line. This is incorrect. What you should do is dismantle the latch hasp from the auxiliary drainage line instead. It's a common mistake. This how to video explains it.

Nope! I mean, I check my produce before buying it, for sure. You don't want rotten or bruised stuff, no way. But apparently I wasn't clear enough in my OP...it wasn't just checking the onions...it was...something else. Dude was like Smeagol finding the ring

People handling produce in the grocery store is the least of your worries. If you could see how many chemicals are sprayed on the fruit and vegetables while they are growing and to prevent spoilage, you would never neglect to wash any produce before consumption.

I live on a farm and recommend that you wash your fruit and vegetables with water and a half cup or so of plain vinegar. It will clean your produce and help keep it fresh.

Shit is used as fertilizer. Of course you wash your produce. Do you think those 'water' lines that spray down the produce every once in a while ever really get cleaned? Mildew filled bacteria sponges is what they are.

While we're at it, if you have one of those spray nozzles on your sink... you'd cringe if you ever looked inside the hose.

Actually, why don't grocery stores have hand sanitizer stations when you go in, like at hospitals? Seems it would be logical. Not that everyone would bother, but put signs to encourage use, and have them there, and some people may actually use them.

I also wonder how often they wash shopping cart handles. Those are probably just as filthy as gas pump handles. I'm sure a lot of people go put gas in their car then go do groceries. Seems like a fairly standard thing if you're going around running errands.

I'm bad for not washing my produce, I just never think of it. I really should try to do it more. Not washing it is a good way to catch a cold or other nasty crap especially when that stuff is going around. And it's just plain gross, like if someone went to the washroom and didn't wash their hands then manhandled produce. Nasty stuff.

All of the local grocery stores here (even Walmart) have wet wipe dispensers by the shopping carts near the entrance. I don't usually bother to wipe down the cart handle, but I've used them to clean my hands a number of times. Not because I much care about anyone else, just because my hands are dirty.

Do you realize onions come from the ground and are therefore "dirty". Do you also realize that onions have an outer layer that is peeled and therefore not eaten thus rendering any "contamination" on that layer as moot? Do you realize that those who harvest the vegetables, while in the fields, and literally miles away a nearest restroom will simply squat on the spot and then continue picking vegetables with unwashed hands? Do you realize that you have an immune system that will combat germs? Do you realize that cooking transfers enough heat to said onions to kill almost all pathogens?

That being said, I also manhandle all easily reachable produce. I want the best one. Sometimes you buy some inferior produce that should not be on the store shelf.
Yup. I always remove a few layers before I start slicing. OP doesn't do that?!
