The best thing to do for produce is to wash it in peroxide. That will take care of both pesticide residue and pathogens.

You can get 35% H2O2 at most health food stores. Normal peroxide is 3% so you only have to use maybe a couple of tablespoons for a gallon of water. Maybe a bit more since there are 256 tablespoons in a gallon.

Actually, why don't grocery stores have hand sanitizer stations when you go in, like at hospitals? Seems it would be logical. Not that everyone would bother, but put signs to encourage use, and have them there, and some people may actually use them.

I also wonder how often they wash shopping cart handles. Those are probably just as filthy as gas pump handles. I'm sure a lot of people go put gas in their car then go do groceries. Seems like a fairly standard thing if you're going around running errands.

I'm bad for not washing my produce, I just never think of it. I really should try to do it more. Not washing it is a good way to catch a cold or other nasty crap especially when that stuff is going around. And it's just plain gross, like if someone went to the washroom and didn't wash their hands then manhandled produce. Nasty stuff.

Why should I wipe down my cart? I'm not afraid of touching something that other people have touched. I am not OCD. Just don't put your hands in your mouth, eyes, nose until you wash them off. But freaking out that someone else is touching the cart, the produce, the cans is obsessive. Are you afraid of touching the ketchup bottle? The bathroom door? I wash my hands after I use the restroom.

Well I'm more thinking because it's a place where people may be likely to touch food, you want other surfaces that are touched to be clean too.

Use warm water and salt and let them soak a bit. That is how Koreans clean cucumbers and zukini's. The salt is acidic and brakes the bond of the dirty. Onions you have to peel off the brown part and then wash in warm water. If you dont want people touching the onions and potatoes, then buy the ones in the bag.
