Went to grocery store. Walked over to onion section in the produce aisle. Dude ahead of me is filling up his basket with onions. Wait my turn. Said dude is taking awhile. Courtesy patience is wearing off. Peek over his shoulder. See the dude literally manhandling every single onion with both hands. Every. Single. One.

By this time, a girl had shown up next to me to get onions too. I glance at her and she is just as horrified. We both just stare, frozen, as this dude, for lack of a better term, fondles the entire bin of onions. Exactly what you just pictured is what happened with every single onion in the bin. I'm talking like 30 onions. It was like a trainwreck.

I don't know what to make of this. I've never seen anything like it. I didn't have a pre-programmed response for this behavior. Do you ask the guy to stop germing up the produce? Do you talk to a manager? I mean, what the crap?! Rofl. Needless to say, I decided not to get onions that day.

Pft a real man would welcome the chance to pit his white blood cells against invaders brought by a rival male to prove his supremacy. Sadly it sounds like his stance of dominance was superior to yours and now he owns all the onions and had sex with that girl. Enjoy your bland food peon

Do you realize onions come from the ground and are therefore "dirty". Do you also realize that onions have an outer layer that is peeled and therefore not eaten thus rendering any "contamination" on that layer as moot? Do you realize that those who harvest the vegetables, while in the fields, and literally miles away a nearest restroom will simply squat on the spot and then continue picking vegetables with unwashed hands? Do you realize that you have an immune system that will combat germs? Do you realize that cooking transfers enough heat to said onions to kill almost all pathogens?

That being said, I also manhandle all easily reachable produce. I want the best one. Sometimes you buy some inferior produce that should not be on the store shelf.

That

This

That one I try to pretend doesn't happen.

Yeah. I don't want to be buying a soggy onion!

It's an onion. You peel off the outer layer and throw it away anyway. What difference does it make?

But yeah, definitely wash everything else.

Aside from the obvious that others have pointed out (onions have layers, are dirty from being in the ground, etc), some people DON'T wash their produce when they get home?

I do the same, especially with my avocados. You kinda have to.

That being said, pics of girl?

I rinse my produce briefly. I dont wash it in the sense of using soap and sanitizing it

I'm pretty sure no one uses soap or any other sanitizing product when the term "washing produce" is used.
If I have waxed lemons and I need the zest I sometimes use a bit of soap and hot water when I wash them. Not sure it actually achieves anything but there you go.

Yeah, avocados need hands-on. Although supposedly this works too:

Absolutely does work! But I don't pick those off at the store. I pick by hand, and remove that little nub at home when I need one.

I'm lazy...if I need avocados today, I pick soft ones, otherwise I just grab the hard avocados and let them ripen.

I recently found out that avocados respond well to vacuum-sealing, so I've been letting them ripen, slice them in half, and vac-seal them with my Foodsaver.

You really have to hand inspect before you select. I can see going through a dozen or two onions before finding one worthy of your ownership.

I have brought home dirty lettuce before. I'm sure it sits in the back of a truck where dust can settle all over it. Then it's perfunctorily sprayed before shipment. Plenty of grime left by the time it hits store display. So I give it a full on bath once I take it home.

I run my fresh produce through the dishwasher with a thimble of bleach in addition to dishwashing soap.
Then I take off and nuke the entire site from orbit.
It's the only way to be sure.

That was me by the way. Seriously, it's very important to get a good feel for your food.
Especially if I'm paying for it, I'm going to make sure I get the best I possibly can.
I also weigh pre-packaged goods and the like because I find there are variations in weight/quantity.
I read all the labels carefully, always calculate costs and compare prices etc.
I rarely have money to buy food...so when I do, I spend at least a few hours maximizing every cent.

Your story does not strike fear into me.

My produce encounter at a local store. Went to pick up some grapes for my Mother, and an older woman (perhaps 50 - 60 years old) that looked kinda crazy was there. As I watched, she was opening every single resealable bag of grapes and taking out the 'good' ones and putting them in another resealable bag. When I say taking the good ones, I mean digging through the bag and taking like 5 - 7 grapes. Of course a couple of workers walked by and said nothing. I told my Mother no way would I ever by her produce from that store again.

What's wrong with this? As long as you maintain (+/- a few percent) the pre-packaged weights.
Though you can usually get better prices, and make things much easier just buying loose grapes per/lb (like buying bananas).

Let us also not forget about the fact that YOU touched the food you plan to eat, and thus coated it in whatever horrifying shit was on the shopping cart, your car keys, your phone that you're looking at her shopping list on, as well as every damned thing you touched since the previous time you washed your hands, you disgusting bastard.

There are medications to treat OCD. But seriously, who doesn't touch their fruits and vegetables to make sure they get the best ones? I suppose I could put on a surgical mask and use tongs just for you. Or... you could wash your produce and peel that outer layer of onion that you never eat anyways.

Definite Post of the year candidate lol.
