I actually thought Foobar sounded better when using my headphones. To be honest the only reason I have kept winamp is because of the visualizations and online radio. I've solved the visualization problems and I can use my browser to listen to online radio.

Some of the Winamp versions fix security vulnerabilities so keep that in mind in mind moving forward. Do a search on this page for the keyword security. http://www.winamp.com/help/Version_History

I thank U for this. I had to get current version when I set up this system and that was not that long ago, but I will try to make sure it's the most secure.

I never use headphones. Well, almost. And no matter how shallow, I like visualizations!!! (Bite me.:sneaky

Oh god no. I don't need Bing toolbar, advertisements and five other programs requirements to play mp3 files.
I would rather see it die than being taken over by Microsoft.

I'd rather see them free the code. I never used Winamp much, but I might give it a shot if it were libre. I see little good coming from MS owning it.

The real question is why would Microsoft even want it? Winamp dieing and microsoft's own WMP going to a paid app for full functionality with Win8 sounds like a Win/Win for MS. I cant imagine there are any patents or a client base winamp would have that is beneficial to MS in that kind of deal, and you're not really buying out the competition when the competition is already closing its doors.

I seriously doubt Microsoft would buy it just to release it for free as a competing product to their own.

Does making it libre in this case really help though? I was under the impression the playback for most of these supported formats requires the publisher of the software to purchase the appropriate licensing. Wouldn't the licensing prevent an open source approach unless they severely limited format support?

Well, I just got the new Lite release, and it changed the skin I luv to one identified with this release which I hate....and now, I can't find the one I luv in this system!!!!!

If I felt certain this new one would roll back to my beloved old, original one, I would uninstall it. But I think it will not roll back.

WILL IT?

I hate myself for having done this just now. Forget I have says restore turned off.

I just looked in Programs, and my Winamp skins folder is EMPTY!!!! This "update' just obliterated former installation! Cept for the presets, which remain in new ugly skin.

Only thing I can think of doing is booting into my backup drive where Winamp remains as it always was and seeing if I can move the Winamp folder to this drive. Or, since my last clone was Tues after hotfixes, just clone backup drive to this one. But I don wanna.

I am VERY angry at me now.

During installation you probably ignored the screen where you could change or keep the skin.
Try installing the older build again.

Depends on where it's hosted. Not all countries have the same patents on software USA has. They could also use plugin libraries hosted out of country. VLC plays just about everything worth playing. They're hosted in France I believe.

Clementine is a nice player. I've been using it more myself. I still prefer Foobar2000 on Windows, and DeaDBeeF on Debian, but I like it's easy access to internet radio, and it's one of the few gui tools that can convert to opus. I've been debating whether or not to switch to opus for my good copies, or stick with vorbis for the time being. Opus is superior, but ubiquitous support isn't there yet, though all my players can play it. Flac's just too big, and it doesn't make a difference on the equipment I use. I can't justify the space taken for technical superiority that can't be heard by me.

Well I can get an older version, but the download is bundled with some sleazoid zip app I no way will let into my house, I only use Winrar.

I think it's time for me to boot into my backup drive.

I need to slow down in general, esp when I am doing stupid things.

SEE THIS? This is making me nauseated. This evil, disgusting skin! I need colors, cursors, icons and skins and all related things a certain way. Or else I am not happy.

lol this is the skin I've been using for ten years and like it

The lite version is definitely not bundled with any crapware, BUT there might be an option to download some garbage during installation. If yes (I can't remember really), just untick any checkboxes that show up.
I am not aware of anything outside of the main program being installed if you choose not to.

Also, I am pretty sure the old skin is still somewhere in there. Can't you see anything in options-skins?

Bless U again, Snowy Owl!

Well, I am now in my backup drive, my much older, 8 cache WD......I am again amazed re how much slower it is than my new Black one......I checked some download sites for older version while still in my main drive, and all of them are riddled with insects.

And, there was way no way I could change the new, repulsive skin. I tried.

So, I will now try to move the entire Winamp folder form here to my main drive.....burn it, hoping the registry in the latter is not too messed up re the new version and maybe allow transfer.

At least now I can now see my ancient, beloved original, Old School skin....U can make a bazillion colors.

Hah! Nausea almost ovah!!!!!!

K, I am back in my dead silent, VERRRRY fast WD Black drive. what I simply did was, in my backup WD drive, copy both the whole Winamp folder and Winamp Detect folder to desktop and burn them to a CD RW.

Then, I booted into this, go-to Black drive with the tummy churning new Winamp, deleted the main Winamp folder and replaced with my new folders from the CD.

Now, all I gotta do is replace the current color with my beloved color.

Very simple. But still annoying and a lesson to slow down and try not to do stupid things U then need to find a way of repairing.

I am very happy I din need to do a whole reverse clone and all's well that ends well. Could I luv my internal backup strategy more than I do? NO.

Snow Owl.....thanks so much for being there and helping!!!!!

K.......now, all I gotta do is reconfigure my equalizer. I am HAPPY AGAIN!

Ironic the new skin I despised, is one U like! But, is also NORMAL!!!

Again, the installation of the new lite version (NOW I get why it is called lite), completely did away with existing version. And, while the skins folder was there, it was EMPTY. I mean it. I opened it and it was EMPTY.

True, it din have insects, or any real options, as I recall, but I would rather have had an insect than end up with what I did. But now, it's all put right!

I broke it without meaning to, cause I expected upgrade with normal options retained.....but then, I fixed it.()

I havn't tried Foobar2000 or DeadBeef. I might install DeadBeef on my laptop which is running Debian and try it out.

I currently have my music ripped as FLAC. But i don't have that many CDs, so i'm only using around 15GB all up. I don't plan on buying many more CDs either to be honest.
